If its down on the computer as PLG ,then it can only be taxed as PLG until it is altered by DVLA , I tried 4 years and my car is 1971 , It had been on sorn in my name and it still had PLG on the Reg document , Went to the Post Office on a Saturday , the lady said i can do it for you but you will have to pay !!!! So i went Monday when there was a new crew of staff , Still the same , So i phoned the DVLA the man said i needed to send the Reg document with a Club letter saying " It is what it is " , Someone posting on the forum a good while back said that he paid for PLG and then got it back from DVLA once the V5 was altered

I know DVLO branches no longer exist and everything has to go to Swansea now, so is this where some of the discrepancies or inconsistencies are ??

This is ridiculous. It's very clear. If your car is over 40 years old then go to P. O with V5C and MOT and get it changed to Historic. Why is this now the latest DVLA minefield? Is it that the cars in question are less than straightforward and so normal procedures are void? Because the guidance is black and white and should be waved in the faces of these P. O counter staff who are non compliant. They can't pick and choose when they can be bothered.

Also, surely if you try and tax a car over 40 years old then the 'system' should refuse or remind the 'taxee' that it doesn't need taxing. Or are these jokers just taking money anyway when it's unnecessary. I haven't even got to this stage yet and I'm sick of it.

That's more like it Andrew. What I would expect and if not then I'd want to know why. Seems restoring the car and finding the money for the astronomical spares prices is only half the story. The other half being the random battles with the authorities to get the thing on the road.

As far as they are concerned it is up to you to apply to change the taxation class - its not an automatic thing. Stupid i know but ....

From what I have read on here there does seem to be A LOT of inconsistencies and to be honest I'm bloody amazed that a little village PO in backwards Norfolk are getting it right where others aren't.

This is what I found/did, I did pay the PLG tax! as I was driving it to Bingley the next week
plus I sent the relevant paperwork to DVLA on there advice, after discussing it with them.

Just a quick note in praise of the DVLA for a change.

I've just received my age related registration number and logbook for the Wood and Pickett Mk1 Cooper S Mk I imported from the states.
It was all done very quickly and took only two weeks for them to process the paperwork. This included the title and most importantly a verification letter from Paul Sulma editor of the MCR.

So fair play to the DVLA

I believe you have to MOT it to start with using the VIN number.

I had the same quick turn around with an age replated plate for an import I bought a couple of years ago. Didn't need a club inspection though? Did need an MOT.
