If its down on the computer as PLG ,then it can only be taxed as PLG until it is altered by DVLA , I tried 4 years and my car is 1971 , It had been on sorn in my name and it still had PLG on the Reg document , Went to the Post Office on a Saturday , the lady said i can do it for you but you will have to pay !!!! So i went Monday when there was a new crew of staff , Still the same , So i phoned the DVLA the man said i needed to send the Reg document with a Club letter saying " It is what it is " , Someone posting on the forum a good while back said that he paid for PLG and then got it back from DVLA once the V5 was alteredspraybeateer wrote:The Person I spoke to in our local PO got the details up on screen and it said
that the tax classification was PLG and I would need to send to DVLA to have it
amended, to be fair to him? as the car was registered 07/01/1978 ie 40yrs old
it doesn't officially qualify for Historic Vehicle Tax till the start of the tax year
05 April, hence the reason for sending all the paperwork to DVLA, proof of
build date ie 07/02/1976, I would have applied earlier! but for 1 of the required
documents, namely the MOT certificate , all the paperwork was sent the same day
that it passed 22 Jan 2018. The car had been on SORN since 2010.
As said I still wonder that only the Heritage Certificate was missing

Re: DVLA targeting Classic Cars?
I'm 99.9% sure that I simply completed section 7 of the 'Red' V5C - 'Tax Class' to show Historic, then took it to my village Post office. They zapped it with the machine, gave me a paper receipt to show 'taxed' and took it off me to send to DVLA. Few weeks later I received the new V5C. No problem at all.Polarsilver wrote:Andrew .. good advice thanks .. for your 75 Pick-Up did you have to apply to DVLA to change the V5c to say Historic Vehicle?
I note that it states on the V5C under 'Tax Class' that 'The tax class in section 4 can only be changed when taxing. Please apply at your local Post Office
However, I have in a folder, older 'Blue' V5C for another of my cars that states in the same place 'The taxation class can only be changed on relicensing. Please apply at your nearest DVLA Local Office
I know DVLO branches no longer exist and everything has to go to Swansea now, so is this where some of the discrepancies or inconsistencies are ??

Re: DVLA targeting Classic Cars?
This is ridiculous. It's very clear. If your car is over 40 years old then go to P. O with V5C and MOT and get it changed to Historic. Why is this now the latest DVLA minefield? Is it that the cars in question are less than straightforward and so normal procedures are void? Because the guidance is black and white and should be waved in the faces of these P. O counter staff who are non compliant. They can't pick and choose when they can be bothered.
Also, surely if you try and tax a car over 40 years old then the 'system' should refuse or remind the 'taxee' that it doesn't need taxing. Or are these jokers just taking money anyway when it's unnecessary. I haven't even got to this stage yet and I'm sick of it.

That's more like it Andrew. What I would expect and if not then I'd want to know why. Seems restoring the car and finding the money for the astronomical spares prices is only half the story. The other half being the random battles with the authorities to get the thing on the road.

As far as they are concerned it is up to you to apply to change the taxation class - its not an automatic thing. Stupid i know but ....
From what I have read on here there does seem to be A LOT of inconsistencies and to be honest I'm bloody amazed that a little village PO in backwards Norfolk are getting it right where others aren't.

Re: DVLA targeting Classic Cars?
Just a quick note in praise of the DVLA for a change.
I've just received my age related registration number and logbook for the Wood and Pickett Mk1 Cooper S Mk I imported from the states.
It was all done very quickly and took only two weeks for them to process the paperwork. This included the title and most importantly a verification letter from Paul Sulma editor of the MCR.
So fair play to the DVLA

I believe you have to MOT it to start with using the VIN number.rich@minispares.com wrote:did they make you mot first, or do it all with out an mot certifcate???Reborn Cooper S Man wrote:Just a quick note in praise of the DVLA for a change.

I had the same quick turn around with an age replated plate for an import I bought a couple of years ago. Didn't need a club inspection though? Did need an MOT.
