Great post Syd. Would love to hear more about your car. Also I was wondering if there are any (Mk2) minis that retain their original chassis number and original engine number. I note that Peter Browing stated the engine number of one of the Mk2's in his original book but omitted it from the reprint.

This is what happened with the original GRX 309D, but it still had a lot of it's original works features and most importantly it's original body number. It also came with a replacement engine complete with factory number from another works Mini! Did yours have a body number Syd?
As for the passage of time, well RJB 327F got it's number plate back after a lot of work put in by the owner.

The Minlites look brilliant. Are they original? Like all parts they must take the toll of the ravages of time. I remember how minis rotted in 5 years let alone 50!

I presume yours is 829 then Syd?

A bent RJB 327F down under with Culcheth...
then rebodied and rallied by Cowan...
The fourth works Mini that went to Oz and last works rally Mini built by Abingdon...

..Did the cars have to be registered purely because they were using public roads ?? that's the only reason a racing/rally car needs a registration plate in any event ?? has that not always been the case ??.. ps one of the best clutch of mk 2 S photos ever posted on this forum !!!..tks for posting foxy52

Apparently RJB was also a camera car for Mabbs at Thruxton that year, wonder where that footage went?
The Thruxton footage was filmed for the BBC's Wheelbase and was, I believe, wiped.
Its unusual for a 1969 car to have door squares rather than circles. The place looks pretty deserted, maybe testing?

I have only just noticed even though I had seen the photos before, but the rebuilt RJB 327F has mark one rear lights!

.I thought the same but then in an Oz mk 2 guise it would have a mk 1 type rad also .. am I missing the point to ?? it is a mk 2 is it not ?? ..its look absolutely fab in blue !!! .. I,d swap mine for it ?!! lol.. foxy52

After it was rolled I imagine it was rebuilt into a new shell.
Australian 'round nose' shells all have the MK1 rear lights, rear window size and 'piano hinge' rear quarter windows which is how the car appears in these pictures.
I guess another 'Trigger's Broom' car, although with a bit more provenance than some.

Under Appendix J evolution rules, a car like the Cooper S that had all bodywork changes homologated that way could effectively mix and match Mk1/2/3 bits.

Leading Scottish driver Andrew Cowan then took the Cooper S to Noumea in January 1971, but managed to roll it eight times. On its return to Australia, British Leyland rebuilt it with a new local body shell in time for the 1971 Heatway Rally of New Zealand. This time Cowan showed its true potential, posting fastest time in 13 individual special stages before engine problems forced his retirement.

....Red yes I suppose for works cars..but it does look tidy in blue ..
