Interesting. Auction description states "Fully inspected by the Cooper Register and authenticated by them as a genuine Cooper S built October 1964"

I didn't think it was bad at 29k......apart from the 4 sync box, 940 head, late servo.....dry suspension ?...it looks like a nicely put together car. There's people asking double that for dubious cars

Ho can the Cooper register get it a vin number? I can understand that they could keep an ordinal registration but create a vin??

Looking at the new 'VIN' number, commencing with the letters DVLA, the Cooper register have told DVLA that the car is genuine - so far as they can most reasonably ascertain given the information available and at hand - (the words we had to use during vehicle examinations) and on that basis, have issued a DVLA 11 digit identifiable 'VIN'

I dare say that if in years to come the owner - or previous owner - comes across the original bill of sale or a log book or repair receipts from the past that identify the genuine but lost VIN, he could petition to have it replaced. But knowing the DVLC/A of the past, I wouldn't be holding my breath!!!!!

Just my jaundiced take on things

I’m sure someone on here has had a similar issue with DVLA recently and that sort of chassis number was allocated ....

This just goes to show that one owner and an OK looker from the outside is no guarantee of a nice original car

You might have saved a few potential bidders a journey Simon! There is some real old junk in some of these auctions isn't there.

Fuzzy photos .. no drip rail etc. But it’s cheap for a mk3 S . Cheap’s probably the wrong word. Not as expensive as a real one

One owner car ..... that's OK if it has been on the DVLA records continuously from 1971.

According to the V5C, I am the first owner of HOY, so technically it's a one owner car as well

There certainly is, there was a very similar Mk 3 S at Brightwells last auction, same owner 40+ years but re-shelled in the 1980's which made £18700 and there is another re-shelled example coming up at Silverstone Auctions Race Retro sale

This one was bought by a dealer at a Barons Auction in October 2017 for £22000, they immediately had it up for sale @ £31995 and now, some eighteen months later, still haven't been able to shift it despite a couple of hefty price reductions. Seems they thought "cheap Cooper S - Kerching!" Clearly they didn't understand the implications of it being re-shelled in regards to its value and have now decided to offload it. Estimate this time is £22000 > £26000 and whilst its a better condition car than the other two mentioned above I'd be surprised if it gets to the lower end of the estimate.

It might look as though Mk 3 S prices have dropped but the reality is that there hasn't been a good original or well restored nice one for sale for quite a while.

Kev and I had a look at this one at the LCC show at the weekend. Kev didn't manage to find to much 'wrong' detail wise on our quick check over. Seemed a nice wee thing.

We didn't look under the bonnet, but I think a Mk3 should have a black, rather than Green engine?
