Confirmed now it seems by Channel 5.........so the MGB GT is an illegal 'ringer' swapping the 1975 ID onto an older secondhand chrome bumper bodyshell in far better condition?!
From Pistonheads forum:
Just found this posted on the TV headed thread following the same arguements as this thread.
Proves the point but raises more questions as well.

Update on the MBG being 2 or even 3 different cars, I sent channel 5 questions which I don't have a copy of but along the lines of confirming if indeed the car was the same as the wreck "rescued " from the barn and about the validity of the 2 week restoration claim. This was the reply I recieved:
Dear David
Thank you for your recent enquiry regarding Classic Car Rescue.
While the production team were filming in Canada, the mechanics in London discovered some serious problems with the MGB, midway through the restoration, which meant they felt it might not be entirely safe to drive. Their original plan was to buy a new chassis, which is a common way that people restore MGBs (you can buy an entire new monocoque chassis for just £1000) and build on top of that. But wanting to stick with used parts, they bought another car and used the chassis from that, transferring much of the first MGB, right down to door-handles, and windows. The cost of the second car was included in the figures mentioned and the end result was a combination of the two.
The programme aims to show how Bernie Fineman and Mario Pacione cope with restoration jobs with a “tight deadline and an even tighter budget” in an entertaining fashion while also giving some background into why each selected model is held in the high regard that it is. It is not intended to, and does not claim to, demonstrate the detailed effort and finance that can go into the high end restoration of classic cars.
Nevertheless, this does not diminish the validity of your opinions and we are grateful to you for taking the time to make us aware of your concerns. Your comments have been logged in our Viewer Enquiries Report. This is circulated throughout the company and seen by all relevant personnel.
Thank you for your interest in Channel 5.
Yours sincerely
Ian

A new MGB GT Shell for £1000? Bring it on, that would be a nice project with a profit at the end of it!

The reg on the finished green 1975 MGB GT is KRC 741P but it is still listed below as yellow, the colour of the second bodyshell used....as seen around the bonnet/hatch shuts before the respray.
Of course for a higher valuation and if you are going to break the rules anyway.........it would have made much more sense to use the earlier V5/reg of the chrome bumper bodyshell, especially if it was pre-'73 and therefore tax-exempt!
DVLA Vehicle enquiry
The enquiry is complete.
The vehicle details for KRC 741P are:

Cylinder Capacity (cc) 1798cc
CO2 Emissions Not Available

Export Marker N

That is very strange, last time I restored a Mini, I was told by DVLA that the only way to retain the original registration was to rebuild it into a brand new Heritage Shell, otherwise it would have to undergo IVA & would probably end up with a Q plate. That was a little awkward as I had already built it into a professionally refurbished shell from the local Mini centre. After a lot of discussion, bearing in mind it had already been MOT tested, it was agreed that it could remain on the road as long as it passed a Vehicle Identity Check, which it did without any question, but I was surprised that they made no mention of the missing VIN on the scuttle. (It was a 1983 Mini City). Basically I was told that in future, brand new shell or nothing! There seem to be some double standards here!
This rule only applies to re-shells, re-panelling an existing shell is ok.

Just watching 'Beetle rescue' on Quest - Freeview channel 38 - which like its sister programme 'Camper rescue' is a far more realistic picture of amateur restoration of one vehicle over a series of about 8 programmes.
I'm not sure it would appeal to a mass market, but it can be theraputic to watch others suffering. saying that, there is the odd bit of TV land suspension of disbelief (especially on costings)
all good fun!

Yep I agree Beetle rescue and Campervan crisis or what ever they're called is a genuinely interesting programme which appears to show genuine enthusiasts restoring their own cars on their own budgets and all the trails and head scratching moments that entails, but I would guess their appeal is limited to classic car enthusiasts only, its not "entertaining" in the way CCR sets out to be. What we need is Mark Evans to do another Car is Reborn on a mini.

i hate beetles and campers with a passion, but oddly i find the beetle and camper programs to be well made, interesting and strangly thereputic as well.
i think the makers got the right mix of people, cars and back story right.
i wont watch anything like this classic car program as i think it does far more harm than good to the classic car movement - ive always been of the opinion that the previous program that the idiot bernie was in, was responsible for the sudden increase in awarness of the tighenting up of the iva!!!

Mark Evans stripped down and restored 3 tatty Rover Mini Coopers into Red, White & Blue Italian Job lookalikes in the TV series "Dream Machines" in 2003. I have a copy of the programme on DVD recorded off Ch5 at the time. The registrations of 2 of the cars were H753 CAP and J467 VDF, all 3 were given away to one phone in prize winner at the end of the show.

This was his reply to an email asking if he had thought about doing 'A Mini is Born' back in 2008:
Thanks for your email.
More than thought about it - proposed a series to Discovery as a tribute to it.
But, see my note below.
All the best,
MARK
"I have received loads of emails from fans of my Is Born shows asking what's next. Sadly, Discovery Real Time have said that its audience isn't after my kind of workshop series any more, so there are no new projects on the horizon. Really sorry. I would love to do more.
If that bothers you, a few suggestions. You can contact Discovery Real Time via the viewer feedback part of its website to let them know what you want to watch.
Or, you could post a message at one of Discovery's forums.
You could also leave a message at the fan page that someone has just started on Facebook under my name."

As an antidote to the total crap that is Classic Car Rescue, did anyone see Wheeler Dealers last night.
They were restoring a BMW Isetta, and made a beautiful job of what was in actual fact already a very nice little restoration project. Garage stored for 30+ years and only really in need of a few easy bits & bobs.
It went to the BMW historic collection in the end.

Have it recorded. I usually watch it with the boys and always get asked, 'Dad, when are you going to finish your Mini's?'

Don't forget to set you VCR's, SKY+ or what have you for Monday at 8pm, Channel 5. It's time to see a Mini get the Bernie/Mario treatment.

Let's see if the 1975 ish Mini that they use (looking at the picture on the C5 website) becomes a Cooper, which is what happened on the last show that I watched (West Coast Customs in Europe) you never know they might do a good job on this one...................
.....................you can bet there's going to be some point Bernie will be in full flow trying to get in as many 'you're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off' type comments in, using full Cockney / Caine mode

Yes, I enjoyed that Isetta restoration too........although Wheeler Dealers receives some criticism by the purists, I think the basic repair and restoration work they normally do, extends the life of a 'classic in danger' without preventing someone improving it further in the future......unlike the Classic Car Rescue type of series.

I've not seen the script, but at a guess
1. Bernie and Mario (henceforth known as B&M) go in search of a Mini Cooper, they don't buy the first one they see because the seller is 'avin a larf' with his price, so they go and find one that's nearly as expensive, but in worse condition and buy that instead
2. Despite constant Italian Job references, including no doubt a door slamming followed buy 'your only supposed to blow the bloody doors off' the car will have no resemblance to a MK1 from the film other than its blue, possibly
3. Although the car looks like it might be a 1975 MK3 B&M will keep saying it's a Cooper when we all know its not as Cooper S production finished in 1971 (the first time around)
4. Something will go 'horribly wrong', something will get dropped / lost / broken or fixed in the wrong way (welding fire anyone) but it may not actually be from a Mini, it just might look like it might have been, this will be B&M's chance to have a 'argument' about who is the worst actor, sorry, business partner in their 'restoration' company.
5. The bodyshell will be taken back to bare metal.......with a grinder........and then have a liberal coat of filler applied
6. The finished 'Cooper' will be valued at £10,000 making everyone who doesn't know the above ring in to try to win it, in turn C5 and the production company will make a large profit on their outgoings from the phone votes, and commission a new series we can laugh at next year

After the classic Mini bodge up/restoration on
'Classic Car Rescue' Ch5 8pm, there follows at 10pm on Nat Geographic:
"Strippers: Cars for Cash"
Supermini Showdown: The teams search for big profit in small cars as one strips a Mini City and the other splashes out on a MINI Cooper. Which will be worth the most as spare parts?"

No wonder all Bernie's cars tickover like burst a***, as he pontificates the wrong tappet setting for a 998 mini. Wonder where he sets the points?
