Sleeving can bring it back to standard bore. The advantage is harder wearing and you will never see them unless the head is off.

I say again, in my opinion, standard or +20 Cooper S blocks are the most valuable. Why would one sleeve an end of life S block when solid wall blocks are still available standard
In 45 years working with classic Mini cars have I missed something?

Nothing wrong with sleeved blocks if done correctly.

I've just built a 999s 8 port screamer on a machined standard A Series block, and quite honestly would have never considered using a 50 yr old s block for the build. Getting a standard good untampered block to bore to plus 20 would have really not been an option..
You can also still pick up standard A series blocks fairly cheaply, although the prices of these is starting to rise.

Do race engine builders prefer to use sleeves anyway or is that just a 'must' to get down to size?

I understand that the liners are made from a better quality ( less porous, harder wearing ) cast iron than the original 50 year old cast block

Most cooper S blocks used in competition 1293 engines will probably have liners in now because STD bore blocks are so hard to find . I know that swiftune use lots of linered blocks in there race engines .
The spun cast iron used in liners does seam to be of superior quality to the original iron used in the blocks .
Many people believe this helps the engines to rev better .

I have seen several FJ type blocks with original 970 tags still riveted on the back .
As far as I can make out they replaced the FJ type in early 64 so could easily have used them for early 970,,s
