This week Paul has collected the 970 engine which his car left Abingdon with from rebuild, photos to follow when Paul passes them to me.
It is interesting that, to the best of my knowledge ( please correct me if I am wrong ), only two Works rally cars used 970 cc engines, one of them being the Tony Fall Polish rally GRX 309D. It must be a fair assumption that Pauls 970 Abingdon engine that was fitted by Johnny Organ is from one of the two cars.

It might be interesting but it is incorrect .... AJB 66B and GRX 5D and LRX 830E spring to mind.

Technically incorrect in that the Tour de France and the post 1964 Marathon de la Route were technically rallies - but real rally people don't consider them as such and the race engines from those cars are not likely to have been put into disposed of (for a song) former rally cars.

Thanks for the info. Simon, the 970 engine was more commonly used in the Abingdon rally cars than I first thought.
I must have missed those, I was basing my comment on info. from the list in the original Browning book.

Wasn't 309D the first to use the swivel type lamp bars?

Probably....
but I have been unable to find photos of the cars sent to the 66 Swedish and thus built in parallel with 309D (310D and DJB92B - the latter a safe bet for being a new car with an old registration). These two may have used the same light arrangement as the single Gp2 66 Monte car or the new swivel bar. If they did use the swivel bar, that makes the Baxter 66 Monte car a one off as the only Gp2 car to use other than the swivel bar under the new 1.1.66. Appendix J.

The four lamp bar which swings was used on the 1966 Swedish on DJB92B

For the historical record, is that from a photo? or were you there, or another source? Any indication regarding lights on the original GRX310D on 66 Swedish?
Without checking dates, I think Sweden 66 fell marginally before Flowers 66 but both were effectively a clash - so 309D would then not be first International competitive use of swivel lamp bar, but only by a very very small margin.

The Swedish started on 13th February and the Flowers on the 24th February - and its from photographic evidence, much as I'd like to have been there, that's all I have!

Shock horror - you mean the under bonnet shot is the same now as it was then as far as panels are concerned - wow , underbonnet shots do tell a lot, more than you think.
