One for Robin111, just posted on the Old Dunfermline facebook page:

"This photograph shows Goodall's Garage just before it was taken down to make way for the Kingsgate Shopping Centre. It was originally the stable block for the Royal Hotel that was situated on the High Street, before being leased by John Goodall in 1875. It was one of the best appointed stables in the country and had the resources to supply up to thirty horse-drawn carts to take the old weavers of #Dunfermline for their drives into the countryside, and they also supplied funeral corteges drawn by Belgian horses, before converting to motor cars in 1921. They introduced their famous electric powered car turntable in 1933. After operating for 100 years they were taken over by Taggart's in 1975 and the doors finally closed in 1976, with the premises later being demolished to make way for the Kingsgate Shopping Centre."

You can see the old post office (recently closed) in the background better than the earlier photos

Hi Pete

Yes, you are correct in saying Dawson Bros garage was in Lymington, they were later taken over by Goddards of Salisbury who were Austin distributors, somewhere around the mid sixty's. I believe that they closed down around the mid seventy's. The body shop was on the first floor, access being gained by a very tall four post lift. The third floor was a very nice flat with views overlooking the Solent with the Isle of White in the distance, lived in by the managing director of Goddards, Mr John Harris. I worked there on many occasions repairing and maintaining the central heating systems and workshop oil fired space heater. Upon closing down most of their tools etc. were sold by auction in Salisbury where I purchased their Van Norman 944 cylinder boring bar of which I posted a picture of back in November. Although well used, it was still it's wooden cabinet complete with original instruction book and tool kit. I still use this machine today although not as much as twenty years ago.

Their main garage was in Dorchester and there was another outlet in Weymouth.
