Remember them as a common sight on the roads too, although as with bubble cars it was cheap Minis that helped kill them off.

The 'On the Buses' films and TV series in the 1970's also probably helped.

My buddy came from a sidecar family.

His dad only ever had a motorcycle licence so all family trips were done in the side car. Commuting, grocery shopping, holidays, you name it.

When he was a little kid they would go on holidays with gear, mum and two boys stuffed in the side car. When he was old enough and space became more of a premium he was upgraded to pillion.

I've not seen his dad since I emigrated to NZ but would not be at all surprised if he's still chugging around town on his BSA, he would be well into his 80's now.

He's also a mad keen sledger. All it would take was a hard frost and he would be out there. I could see the field behind their house across the valley from my flat and first sign of snow there would be an ant figure in the distance going up and down the slope. Quite a character.

BBC have just showed Britian in Focus - episode 3 covering the 60s and 70s. They took a look at Hinde postcards with their intesifed colour, nice one of motor racing on Jersey at St Oeun's Bay. John Bulmer who dared to break convention by photographing the North of England in Colour! Jane Brown's wonderful portraits of Michael Caine, John Lennon etc. Worth a watch.

When I paused the picture above on the TV it did not appear to have a front registration number and when the rear doors were opened to let the Police Dog out they were Tweed Grey inside with some rust appearing in the lower rear side panel, so I guess it was an older van made to look like a 1971 Police Mini van. Not many viewers would have been able to pause the TV picture for a closer look back in 1971!

Alec Issigonis has a lap or two in a racing Mini at the Brands Hatch Mini festival, May or June 1967.

Same event, and a couple of Cooper S cars ready to race.

777HMJ, another behind and what looks like a white/black Cooper.
