Woe is me.

Cleaning up the block tonight and fixing a couple of things and got to thinking more about this bent valve and was looking at the block, then looking back at the head, then at the block etc etc and thats when realisation snuck in, I'll add the pictures with an explanation at the bottom, see if you can work it out.

Cylinder 4.

Cylinder 3.

Cylinder 2.

Cylinder 1.

See the marks at the upper edge of 4,3,1
Thats where the mahoosive inlet valve is touching

The reason you can't see it on 2 is because its actually just on the gasket / edge of the cylinder, thats why that inlet bent, it was wide open as i tightened the head down, couldnt go anywhere cos the block was there and bent at an angle towards the piston centre.

So in effect it wont work on a smaller bore whereas it was fine last time we fitted it on a 73.5mm motor.

I was going to ask if you had checked that but I thought that the head had been on that block before? I guess not. at least all you'll need is a small relief pocket to clear the valve?

its been on a 1380, (on amals, quickest mini we had until the vtec), and it was fine there, apart from the melted pistons eventually anyway

When i dry built it here i only set the tappets up on cyl 1 and 4 to make sure the valves didn't smack the pistons. (i didn't have the rocker spacers then)

then of course i built it with those different bits

I could take this head (lets call it 'A'), put it on the 1380 8 port giving approx 13.8 CR (currently around 13.7) and then put that head ('B') on here giving high 12's CR, the only downside of that swap is I'm putting the bigger valve head on the 286 cam engine (but it would show if the valve sizes on 'B' were the reason it ran into a brick wall powerwise?)

Head B is one of the early ones from back in the day when they were first brought back by MS.

Head C is the one i would prefer to use (modded ex Steve Harris) but that will have to stay with the other 1380 as neither 'A' or 'B' would be suitable for the supercharger build on that engine.

Yes I could pocket it, its only a smidge required on 3 cylinders but that middle bit needs shit loads out.

If I swap heads then the other thing i have to check is whether the throttle bodies will fit ok, will i have to move the new TB's with head A.?

Arrrghhh, its all up in the air, but one way or the other I'll have to decide this weekend as times going on.

curses!

it just goes to show that your 'one off' was certainly built for a 'one off purpose' doesn't it!

you could always buy a new head.....

If it was on a 1000 as suspected then the pockets would be huge, and who needs a 1000 with 38mm inlet valves?

Decision was made tonight to use head 'C' I don't know the valve sizes or CC in the head, but thats what we're going with, that at least means that 8 port 'B' stays complete and as a running car.

some good news for a change  , took head 'C' off Chris's engine and brought it back home, cleaned it up a bit and on for a test fit, worked through setting the tappets and all ok, turned it over and over and over, nothing catching :D

Valve sizes are 37, 30 after a quick measure, will measure the chamber cc tomorrow after I finish lapping the valves in and fitting new stem seals.

At some point I'll get permission to do a video on it, seeing as I did most of the work on it.., 190bhp VTEC.

dyno day today, roof of england touring assembly tomorrow.

Went well, a couple of odd happenings, rocker cover cap (and bit it screws onto) vibrated off! and rocker cover t bar also decided to unscrew itself, which made a mess..
Some interesting pics with the thermal camera, why? because i could of course!!

The fuel map was way, way, way off alot of time spent knocking it down by huge percentages.
End result 114bhp at 6500 (ie just as the rev limiter cut in) and max torque 103lbft at just over 5000rpm, i'm fairly sure there's more in there if i really wanted but 3 hours on the rollers was enough for today ta :) that'll be flywheel figures btw.
I'll get the printout scanned in this next week and hopefully get the video edited and uploaded for wednesday.

Worth the session then it sounds like you are good to go Rich for entering Marks class at the Hardwood Classic Hill Climb?

Elsewhere with the mini club George.

It really needs a lesser cam to make touring more enjoyable, it got a good top end but needs to be kept on the boil too much, it would need a better bottom end in it to safely explore the cams potential I think.
I'll probably buy something suitable off rich to put on the shelf ready.

!!!!!

Well it looks nice

What do you use to retain the collar, Jonathon (dyno man) said try something called bearing fit?

thoughts on best road or rally cam for the 8 port,? I think this cam is too top heavy for a 1293 road car, it certainly feels that way.
