Great Mini racing at Mallory. Congrats to Tim on his third overall. Great driving. Super drifts and sideways views of all the mins coming through the esses.
Most enjoyable part of the day. Oh the cottage pie was also good in the Diner.

Well that's really nice to hear Broadspeed, it was indeed a great race if a little short on entries, what it lacked in quantity was there I think in quality as it ebbed and flowed throughout the full forty five minutes, the result only becoming clear near the end. This is what we all want to see next season, close clean racing with that feel of the mid sixties.

Helluva day! First time of doing a 45 minuter (knackering)
Grateful for Andy and Yorkie for throwing themselves off allowing me to move up (they were both faster than me)
Fuel was all but gone as carb was leaking. Another lap or two and it would have died!

Highlights:

BMW runs out of brakes



Yorkie chucks it off in overtaking manouvre that went wrong





Just had to get past these two :



Got a bit squeezed onto the marbles at one stage with the Lotus



Even when I had got mainly past him, it was a bit touch and go to get away (see mirror)

Well an interesting day with lovely weather to boot !

Five minis turned up Andy/Wizzo, Tim Harber, Roger Ebdon/Tim Watson, William Ward and myself. Qualifying seemed to go pretty much to form, Andy and Wizzo well out in front and the other Mini's bunched together in the middle to lower order of the pack.

The race was a real ding dong affair, a bit more ding than dong for some of us - cue Mr Harrison

Personally I didn't get a great start and dropped down to the third Mini then quickly down to 4th after 3 laps, then things started to settle down. After about 10 laps Andy was some 10-15 seconds down the track from the other three chasing Mini's of Roger Ebdon, Tim Harber & myself and traded some paint with a Dagenham dustbin! I didn't see what happened, I just witnessed the stranded front bumper on the track at the hairpin. Andy ???

Andy then received the black and orange flag and lost a lap to the other three Minis’, so was effectively out of the running which was a shame as his car was running beautifully!

On the next lap I got past Tim as he fumbled a gear change coming out of the hairpin and then spent 2-3 laps trading places with the Ivor Miller Tina. Once I cleared the Tina I tried to keep tabs on the Ebdon Mini in front of me which was about 3 seconds down the track. As the Ebdon Mini took to the pits I decided to dive in just behind. Just my luck as the final 5 seconds of my stop were counted done the friggin engine died! Much panicking and button pressing later, I managed to get the engine sparked up again, but lost about 5 seconds !

I carried on in pursuit of the lead Mini and gradually reeled him in over the next 10 laps, this included a rather entertaining moment when the windscreen wash bottle fell off and became lodged somewhere in the pedal box, a few of footie skills and one handed driving resulted in it being deposited somewhere in the rear of the car. Coming out of Gerrards on lap 35 an opportunity presented itself when Tim Watson was being held up by the Tina of Ivor Miller who was a lap down. I got a good slingshot down the back straight, got up the inside but basically ran out of track !!! DOH ! Silly Me !!! I did a full 360 and back across the track after getting the front wheel on the grass on the inside, fortunately I kept the engine running and selected first only to paint the armcoe in mud, at which point I saw the Blue Mini or Mr Harber whizzing past in front of me. Tim had been minding his own business running consistent laps and was starting to gain on the leading Mini himself. Anyway now I was Rally Driving so second it was, this provided the traction got me onto the black stuff, albeit 10 seconds down and race ruined Rookie mistake me thinks !!!!

I proceeded to see Tim Harber take the Mini class lead with 6 laps to go and go on to take a well deserved class victory and also a 3 o/a to boot , I was really happy for Tim in only his 3rd Meeting - well done Tim !!!

I managed to claw some of the time back but ran out of laps. But after 45 minutes only 4 seconds separated the leading 3 Mini's. I enjoyed the race and hopefully the spectators did too. My highlight was overtaking the Miller Lotus Cortina twice around the outside of the Hairpin - boy that felt good

I quick big up for William Ward who was the last Mini home - I think this was only his second race but he seems to be improving his times at a rapid rate, pretty much where I was last year - trying to figure things out !!!

I'm sure Andy and Tim will have their own take on the day - chaps over to you ???

Ah - you beat me to it with the posts Tim - where's the checkered flag - that must have been a highlight !!!!

Well done all!!! Looks like we missed an excellent race.

I'm sorry we weren't there but having retired my FIA car the engine is already out to have its 970cc re-fitted with the 1293cc engine ready to go into the new car we have built for Paul Tarry. Instead we were at Brands with the 8 port.

Sorry to see your damage Andy, I now have all the bits and pieces you wanted from me so I guess you can install them during your re-build.

I hope we will enjoy similar competition against each other in the Masters next season.

Well we had positives to take from the day. The car is finally handling as i want it to and engine finally giving me the power too. Qualifying went really well and i am at least in the same zone as Whizzo and got into the 57s area and 4o/a. Race well, it was going well, car performing well, when on lap 10 i think, i was catching a Cortina through Gerrards and right with him at the esses leading upto the hairpin when we had a 50/50 incident i got somewhere near along side him but he just turned in anyway we came to a stop i got going again but with masses of black smoke from n/s/f tyre rubbing bodywork. I kept going to try and get into the pit window which we just managed but took 4 mins to sort damage and swap tyre. Well i at least i got fastest mini lap but Whizzo had no chance with the lost time and badly toeing in Mini. Damage not as bad as it looks and on with it already. Well done to Tim Harber on his result as he was going well and he deserves it as he is a really nice chap who is great to race with.

good effort tim, makes all the recent hassles and expense seem worthwhile!!!!

Gives you an idea how close one make racing can be.

A couple of pointers: There is a built in rev limiter on injection cars which you can just about hear (juddering) as he gets to full speed in top down the long straight. This tends to nullify some of the slipstreaming advantage as you have to time your slingshot past so you arrive at the corner before your competitor, not halfway down the straight as you may get nabbed again. Its only here and Combe where we can hit the limiter in top

The gearing is much simpler than a proper comp car as the ratios are standard (wide spaced) 3rd and 4th only at nearly every track. I have to say that it's the biggest single problem I have in making transmission to close ratio boxed cars

Fantastic racing, I was annoyed in the first video that the driver didn't pass on obvious places, but towards the end I understood that this was experience. He knew where and when to pass!
