my brother has a series 2 with a v8 in it

it doesn't handle, doesn't go very fast, drinks petrol like its in a race, but sounds fantastic

its the landrover equivalent of my favourite sort of mini....

it had a rainbow painted down both sides on the 1970's and looks hilarious
Sounds like my dream machine!!

Have almost bought a Landy I don't know how many times...but I will end up with one sooner or later!

here it is, its been off the road for a bit as it needed a bit of love

Image

my bro bought it off the daughter of the guy who owned it as she had inherited it and didn't have space for it, apparently in the 1970s he 'did it up' and asked her (as a young girl) what colour she wanted it to be painted........

light blue with a rainbow on the side was her answer

the inside was a proper creation, the dash has about a 100 clocks and switches (non of which worked) and it had a pair of paddy hopkirk buckets in the back (which I claimed 8-) )

the thing on the roof is a fold out tent.

its had a lovely engine conversion, done the correct way and all fitted like a factory job, the gearbox is pretty weak on it though, so you have to be careful with it.

oh, and it sounds ace

:ugeek:

Man that is cool - I trust your bro will be doing it up with a light touch, that paint job must be preserved!

oh, he will never paint it, don't worry about that

he had done the rear axle, fitted some parobolics, and built a new v8 for it as the one that's in is a bit sad.

we are going to have to sort the dash as its a real mess behind with all the wiring

he got a bit distracted with an old tractor

So who's racing then ?

As far as I know the Minis are :
Hoy / Ruhan
Gavin / Swift
Aaltonen/ Stanley
Martin / Harrison

I doubt they'd let more Minis in, anyone know who else is driving what ?

It's not always been that way but it is about how well connected you are with Goodwood and with which famous driver that does the trick. I remember having talks with Richard Sutton before the first Revival about which cars and drivers could be sourced and invited , I wouldn't get the phone answered now I don't think ! I can't believe Brian Redman hasn't raced a Mini there yet, he's just never been asked. Other period racers that still compete would love to take part like Phil Wicks but Goodwood do like to stick to their familiar connections, yes it is a bit of a closed shop. I can understand it to a degree though as most punters that spectate couldn't care less so long as they see a good race and the usual cars that get invited are well funded and tend not to brake down !

There's plenty of corporate connections though at Goodwood, very much with Ford in years gone by who invested heavily (and boy couldn't you tell from the grids !) and it's the same situation with the BMW Mini being shoe horned onto the list this year (quite surprised they've let five Minis into the St Marys actually). They spent a fortune on building that car, a BMW factory backed entry in all respects and it went backwards last time. Just shows you how difficult it is to build a competitive top line App K car with all the 'tricks'. So who's driving the BMW car ?

A succinct and measured appraisal. I'm still hoping for my day in the sun, although at 50 years old and pre-66s invited only every other year, I clearly have to face the fact that I may never get there. The whole thing is shrouded in mystery unless one is part of the specific Goodwood OBN. What is more, information surrounding it is jealously guarded....old friends I have known for years become deaf and mute when I enquire as to the possibility of racing there - "What do you want to race there for?"........."It's bloody dangerous there, you know?"......"I don't think it's the circuit for you, old mate", etc, etc....

Another thing I will say is that you know what sort of event it is classified as in the corporate network when it is easier to get a ticket from a Premiership football club's commercial director "How many do you want?" than a regular Goodwood competitor who was the best man at your wedding and is godfather to your son, "Not a chance, mate!"

there is going to be a special mini themed display at goodwood this year.

ive been dotting 'i's and crossing 't''s for various people for the last couple of weeks sorting stuff and people out (in a very, very limited way, im not lord marchs right hand man or anything like that!)

one of the people was a bit put out yesterday when he offered me a couple of tickets and I said that it was ok, but I didn't want to go

an e-pint for the first person to post a photo of it though, its quite epic

Rich. It's OK. If I had a quid for every person who said he was Lord March's right hand man, I'd be doing alright!

I'll look forward to seeing that then, no chance of an early picture from me as I 'm not going of Friday, I guess I have been lucky having been involved in dispalys and running cars at both Goodwood events, maybe one day we will get another chance :P

Weather's not looking good for Friday and Saturday though :|
