To be honest the shaft is good from what I seen, I've had it sat in wd40 all night and havent cleaned it up

But I may take up Graeme on his offer of a passenger side driveshaft?

the snap ring is about 5mm in from the end of the shaft, so you have no chance of getting to it.

all that will happen if you keep on smashing away with a hammer is that it will break and jam up even more - its possible to start breaking the end of the shaft off if you hit it hard enough.

if its rusty its probable that the splines will be knackered anyway, so cutting is the best option.

for the ease of finding a new shaft id sling it.

a mate of mine has had the same problem, he cut the inner part of the pot of and got away with it, but it didnt look half as bad as yours!

After seeing it, as guru said use a cutting disc.

My usual trick for removing anything thats proper stuck is lots of heat and wd40 plus a big hammer, the problem I'd have though is getting plenty of heat into something as chunky as that with a small gas bottle and blowtorch.

You could always use a big one

But that means actually going out and buying some kit, rather than just 'borrowing' whats available

I'm actually pretty gutted if I have to bin it as I painted it before stripping it! Doh!

By the looks of things.... that paintjob will need redoing.

Thinking about it, it's the outer end CV that you can strip & get at the circlip, not the inner.

I don't care what any of you buggers say, I have ended up picking a circlip off the end of a drive shaft to release it before now. Little screwdriver & a pair of pliers is all it took.

Mind you I have never tried to re use a driveshaft that looks like it has spent most of its life at the bottom of a swamp either.

Actually - if you removed the thick circlip and then slid the CV further up the driveshaft that might be possible?

dont you have to turn the inner cage through 90 degrees and flick the balls out one by one before the inner cage comes out of an outer c.v?

bit hard to do when the shaft is still stuck on it.

i suppose if the cv is well worn the cage might come out like the one on a pot joint does????

At least this subject has created a little bit of discussion. Heat is very good I use it a lot in my work ( bolts upward of 50mm diameter ), to do it justice you have to get the items cherry red and if possible a quench in water helps. With your half shaft the shaft and splines will be heat treated too much heat might get the end off and ruin the half shaft. Get a small 125mm cutting disc as guru says carefully grind a slot remove as much metal as you can use the slot created and get a good chisel support it on something solid, if you have an anvil or good work bench and vice, put the chisel in the slot( if necessary to act like a wedge) and hit it with your club hammer It should split(it will be very brittle) if it does and if it does'nt

When your whacking it with the hammer, are you hanging the shaft vertically ? Doing this horizontally loads half the bearings.

edit: didn't read all the posts, that would be the outer CV...........

this is why the telephone/internet is no good at sorting these little engineering problems out. Got to go down to the shopfloor and see what actually is the problem...
