daft as it sounds, the cheapo red carpets that minispares sell are a pretty good 'period looking' thing - they are a bit too orange, but the tuft they are made from is ok, with a bit of trimming they can be made to fit ok - the biggest ballache is that the front bit needs cutting down its length and restitching together.


for the 35 quid they cost they certainly don't brake the bank as something to use in a 'everyday' car


the one in my sprint has done a good few years of service now, and has faded to a 'Donald trumps hair' colour where the sun catches it, but apart from that its fine

You would not think it beyond somebody to re-manufacture something pretty close. It was made once before after all. You say the Autolux is almost the same Mark? BAS just dismissed the idea? I wonder if any other manufacturer would be interested - something like marine or commercial carpet.

You could always use up the rest of the roll on your house. Imagine falling down the stairs on that - you would be on fire! Wall to wall red Veltone - it would look like an abattoir....

Usual thing is the cost. By the time you have had a single roll of each colour made up, then subbed out the cutting and binding to someone like Newton, that is going to be a pretty expensive carpet set.

Rich...i was wondering about the minispares stuff, but i'm always wary of how well the photos reflect the true colour. My stuff is basically orange...the sun has done it's stuff. Last thing i want is something that looks like i've spilt a bottle of red wine all over it.
When you say that it needs to be cut down it's length and restitching, what's that actually trying to resolve exactly? I'm trying to picture where it needs 'adjusting'.

it has a massive 'hump' in it to form the tunnel and its too big, so I just cut mine and got a car trimmer to re stitch it so that it followed the shape of the floor more tightly

glad i asked...the picture doesn't show a hump for the cheapo one, but that CK960M (£137) does.

A friend of mine had some done. Fantastic result.

If anyone needs some of the little fibres they use for the flocking they can have mine. My Traveller is full of them where the old carpets moulted. You only need to apply a tiny dot of glue to the end of each one then get it to stand up while the glue dries.

that's what i was thinking. Worth digging out a thin piece of rubbing backing and sending it off to see if they can do a sample?

The carpet I mentioned was a genuine piece that the flock had rubbed off. It was completely stripped and re-flocked. If you do not have a good original piece to have re-done then you would need to buy a similar sheet of rubber and cut it to shape and have that done.

And the difficulty of getting a new piece of rubber cut is that the original fronts were moulded, not just flat.
