I think it's sorted now. Thanks for all the suggestions.
It was a multitude of small things.
Tracking was toeing in slightly, the tie rod bushes were too tight and the inner one was all squished (technical term) up. Finally the fitting of new column top and bottom bushes made the column stiff. That will settle down after some driving.
