I've got to cut to the quick here Jason and respectfully suggest that while you are undoubtedly a most keen amateur, tackling the jobs, it's time to throw in the towel and get some pro help. Time to swallow your pride and take the car - or just the engine - to a pro. Seemingly, we can't help from the sidelines looking in

hi
i agree with peter although checking with straight edge devices unless using feeler gauges you can miss a thou or so as the eye can not pick that much up and a few thou will make a difference
also the head can be straight in 1 direction and off in another direction
as we are working with cast iron it will not pull down and seal like alloy it all has to be spot on or the problems that you are having arise
get it all ground and decked and it will work out but use a reliable engineer as some will linish it instead of grinding makes a difference
i had this problem with a reno the head had been serviced by a supposed good engineer on assembly your problem took head to an other guy he had to do the head twice before it was right reassembled it was right and went like the clappers much higher comp
cheers and good luck roger :D :D

As Jason said are the head nuts getting thread bound ??? , why are you using ARP Bolts ect , i had this problem a few years ago when i had a 1275 block decked around 6mm , fitted the head studs , head and the nuts were getting thread bound before the head was torqued up, i found some old head studs from a small bore engine and found out they were about 5mm shorter , fitted theses and had no trouble.

CHECK THE ARP HEAD STUDS ARE NOT TO LONG ?????

Yes did check with feelers under the straight edge, couldn’t get any underneath in any direction, many moons ago I did actually have a career as a chemical engineer so am not totally inexperienced with hardware 😉 Someone on here suggested the ARP bolts as a possible cure, didn’t relish spending another £150 on bolts kit especially as I’d already replaced all the bolts with new OE ones. Hey ho money pits needs must! Gonna drain fuel tank tomorrow, get rid of all that nasty shite juice that looks like Bisto gravy!

hi
that must be terrible petrol that you have over there i can leave my chainsaw for months with fuel in it and will start first pull my laser stands in the carport for weeks at times and usually starts as soon as the key is turned with barely a full turn of the engine i am not talking about e 10 here as i would not put that on a bonfire as it is just rubbish
cheers roger :D :D
