No need to raise the car if the pit is only 5' deep Dermott. My pit is only 4' deep (water table below that....). I have a cheapo short roll-along seat that I sit on and work from. Easier to sit down at work than to stand I say. Mine also has a 32" wide opening which is plenty and even mini wheels easily straddle it.
Have a great remainder of the weekend

Dermott ,you will not get any younger dont go underground too early
.. so many benefits to a 4post Lift beyond under car inspection & car storage . they make a fantastic adjustable height work surface that is ideal to lay out things such as Wireing Harness etc along with the fact that you can clamp down any metalwork /engine/gearbox/woodwork etc / all much safer than a Pit if you are a lone worker .. i also use mine as an adjustable sky hook to attach a chain block when i need a single point lift or pulling capability .. can agree not everyone has sufficient garage height for a 4Post Lift but if possible better to have than not

Or you can have the best of both worlds. A £1000+ 4 poster AND a 5' deep pit costing £50 for the wood and pit boards

The opening is 7 feet but it extends for another foot under the floor, for protected electricity, lights and a fire extinguisher.

Decking finished...really solid floor. Next is framing up the walls.
Yes Peter, I did frame in a opening for a pit....will cut the decking out after I get the building up and secure.

Well, after a brief stop work due to an inclement early storm with wet snow....(all gone now)...work has resumed.
Nice sunny Fall days have yielded good progress.
First, North wall all framed and....today, got it erected and in place. Used a block and tackle system to lift structure up in place.
Next is the west wall....few feet longer....will be a big lift!.
Used the three S's principle...Safely, slowly and surely

Good progress Dermot, good to see you are utilising a couple of axle stands and a trolley jack, those essential chippies tools
Just wondered if you might be running an RSJ across at ceiling height ? Helps support ceiling (some big spans there) and you could use it to move heavy things around and lift stuff with a small gantry crane.
Keep photos coming, after all itis a build thread

Thanks for the encouragement.
Will be a slow build thread as we are heading into winter here.
Canadian winters are not for the faint of heart...in spite of that...we love our climate.
.Hoping to get the framed and up in pace in the next few days.
Regarding an RSJ......decided that this will be my personal show room.....no heavy work etc. I have three other shops with all sorts of equipment....lift etc....machine shop...body work and a mechanical shop. plus I have a large Quonset for heavy duty work and non restored cars.
Cheers
Dermott

Are you going to lag in between the vertical framework? Perhaps face with some foil backed plasterboard to help the temperatures?

Our buildings are well insulated in Canada....the walls will have R20 insulation...ceiling...R40+ Exterior of the building is wrapped with Tyvek...windows at least double glazed,
Heating is provided with a natural gas forced air furnace,,,,,,,.they are pretty toasty in winter and cool in summer.

Weather has been great so far....got the big west wall all framed and raised into position.....one more to go.
Used the old tried and proven gin pole method to erect the wall.

Weather has been really kind to me....warm and sunny (yesterday was 17C)
All ready for the trusses....they should be here in about a week. Getting the roof on will be a slower task if we get some snow.

Looking really good, something really nice about building in wood... interested to see if there is any mid-support for the trusses, looks quite a span...
