As to the plane, a Carvair, a converted Douglas DC4. British Air Ferries (or similar name) based at Southend owned or run by Rupert Keegan's father. Must have been making money at one time as RK reached F1.

Beware newish "bibles" on works Minis, where a Bristol Freighter (or SuperFreighter) is described as a "Carvair". There's a good enough clue in the number of engines....

Ever heard of works cars being airfreighted back direct to RAF Abingdon? It was technically possible by arrangement....unless someone knows different...

To the best of my knowledge, he has not returned to the UK.

Has anyone actually seen the current version of HJB? I know Rauno told me it was left in Kenya after the rally. I was also approached many years ago by someone who was making a replica of it, around the time it was re-registered.

Does anyone know the chassis number of HJB656D?

The chassis number’s in the Peter Browning book, which must have been quite useful when the logbook was applied for in 1990, during the Gold Rush.

I do reckon that there seem to be more "Ex works cars" in existance now than was once the case

But how many original cars were wrecked on International rallies and rebuilt with the same registration number into replacement "original dated shells?"

That’s a different subject Cliff, as I’ve always said any car built by the boys at Abingdon is a works car no matter what number plate it wore.The combination of Peter Browning publishing all the chassis numbers and DVLA torching their old paper records created the perfect storm for the wave of logbook applications that followed is all I know, often to stick on cars with no connection to Abingdon. Old news though by any stretch of the imagination.

Were there multiple cars made with the same body number as the works car around 1990?
I'm Japanese and have a 1966Morris CooperS, and I was wondering why there are cars with the same chassis number in the UK.

How long have you got . Clones of cars here have been built and shipped over to Japan for many years, and by the same token clones of genuine cars already out in Japan have also been built here. I remember coming across quite a few over the years. Japan is a long way from the U.K. and that helps the car cloners get away with it. There’s a very well known case going on right now of a very original genuine 1071 in Japan thats been cloned here but we’re not supposed to talk about it on here, amongst others that have made a big stink in recent times, tip of an iceberg . If you’re looking for the chassis number you need the first edition (paperback) of Works Minis by Peter Browning.

Rauno told me HJB was left in Africa after it failed to finish the East African Safari Rally so there’s that, and I was also told first hand that a replica of the car was being built here in the early 90s. Best to message me about it instead.
