carbon metallics would be my choice, but they must be run on a solid disc for best results, and the compound must be choosen to suit the event/weight of car as there are different compounds avalible - not all of them eat the discs
A one hour historic touring car race must be the ulitmate test of any pad/disk combination. (Donnington Historic Festival this weekend, U2TC race, full grid of 34 cars, regretably only three Cooper S 's).

We use Minispares carbon metallic pads and solid disks on our Appendix K Mini and find them totally reliable, can out brake any of the larger cars with no fade, unless they shut the door with a vengence, see Oulton Park Masters in March. Disk wear is noticable but you just need to replace disks and pads regularly, thin disks and pads = no heat sink and hence higher temperature. I suggest that a more important item to look at if fade is a problem is brake fluid, frequent replacement with an appropriate temp range product could be your answer to fade. Throw away the servo for more feel!

I can support that. I use Minispares carbon metallic pads and solid disks as well on the rally car. The disk turns blue in a few heavy braking corners, but they never fade. I have tried running on Mintex, but they were not very good.
Castrol SRF Racing Brake Fluid is the thing. I will never use anything else road or race car.

Interesting.

Last mini was a 1340/286/A+box/3.44/S Discs/Greenstuff and was driven to 9/10, 9/10 of the time.

Greenstuff were fine. They took a while to bed in properly and were not confidence inspiring. I got to the point where I thought, "They're coming off, so I might as well cook them and see if that sorts them out". So I went out on a drive with my foot on the brake. Needless to say they were smoking! After that, they were perfect. Really textbook pads, best I've owned.

The old 1430 is still in the shed, but when it comes out, it should be very exciting indeed and I'm going to be looking at some carbon metallic pads.

I'm interested in the variety of these as well as what they do to wheels. I have some nice magnesium minilites which I'd rather not ruin. Do I need to "coat" them?

Cheers.

Very interesting comment. A few years ago I bought some kevlar pads for my Volvo. These came with detailed "break-in" (or should that be brake-in:) instructions. They recommended accelerating to 80 kays, braking hard to 20, accelerate to 80, brake hard - and repeat at least 10 times. Somewhat different to the usual instruction to take things easy for x hundred kays.....

When I redid the brakes on my S I fitted a NOS master cylinder kit along with the green stuff pads.. The kit turned out to be defective and after the first application the brakes remained partially applied. By the time i arrived in town (about 15k) the green paint was burned black. But the pads have worked brilliantly since.....

Every time I see negative reactions to Green Stuf pads I wonder about bedding in procedures - never seen another set of instructions like those with the Volvo pads.... I've recently bought a new set of GS pads and shall certainly be trying a bit of tough love after fitting.

Anyone have any thoughts???

Cheers, Ian

ive had heat bedding in instructions before, i cant remember if they where carbotec or hawk pads though.

my green stuff pads in my car (7.5 setup) dont resemble greenstuff any more... pretty burnt up and flakey and still work fine!

i had big problems with yellow stuff in am MG maestro racer i ran. the pads where okish for a season, but soon as you went off season and left the car for a bit its like they went off. the first time you used them they literaly crumbled and fell off the backing. we just assumed they had adsorbed moisture from the air off season and because they arent being cycled off season got to the point where they where no good .
