Hi Rich.
The force of this quake and depth meant even modern buildings couldn't withstand it hence why so many office blocks and hotels are down.

Hi guys,
Because of communication problems at home, this is the first chance I've had to let you know how we are. My family and I are fine as are my cars and precious workshop. Our house is structurally OK but there are plenty of dry-wall cracks and there is some foundation cracking. We are quite proud of the way our quite old timber 2 storey house coped and I am sure a wooden house is the one to have in an earthquake. Insside the house was a huge mess. Everything that was standing or on a shelf was strewn over the floor and often broken. Our walk-in pantry was hugely messy, jam, eggs, flour, cooking oil, you name it and it was on the floor mixed with broken glass. Just outside the pantry door is a built in liquor cabinet that ahd also emptied onto the floor and all this was running onto the carpet. The problem is, we had little water to clean anything up so we had to do our best with a shovel and broom. We lost a few pieces of antique china but we feel very lucky to have survived without injury or serious loss. The concern expessed from my many friends, both NZ and overseas has been amazing and very warming. Many forum friends have also enquired, we really appreciate that too. So far as I know, there are no Mk1 or MCR forum members in our area, a close suburb to the epi-center in Lyttelton. Because this quake was so shallow, it was violent but it didn't radiate that violence as far as a deeper one would. My thoughts are with the families and friends of those who haven't survived, some of whom are yet to be found.
Thanks for your concern, we really appreciate it
Al

Hi Al,
It is beyond comprehension for us over here but we see the 'footage'.
Glad to hear you're all safe.
I can only imagine what happened to those houses in Diamond Harbour/Lyttleton etc
with the 'overhangs'.
Best of etc
