ouch!
do tell the story behind that, it's quite an impressive engine failure

Fortunately not mine but a friend - Modsports Elan 2.0BDG, first run out at Croft and it let go on the first lap.
....never got the post mortem so don't know the failure mode - possibly main cap bolts?

The ex-works Trevor Reeves Metro now runs with a 1300cc ford / Mini conversion. The best conversion I've ever seen

That's an interesting crankshaft
Large diameter tail with a spline for flywheel
The one I have has the large diameter , no C slot , no slot in end of crank for key and a non-standard taper

Some weird science there. Why go to all the expense of a one-off crank and have a taper ?

Just to make it a pain in the arse 45 years later
I do like the idea of the spline , that could be a good way to resorect cranks with knackered tapers .
Spark eroding could be the way to go now

Update from earlier in this thread (see Aug 16th 2016) and new photos below recently posted by 'Stoneface' on TMF (The Mini Forum)
Ford X-Flow Mini Engine:-
"Yesterday I decided to remove the engine for inspection, clean and rebuild.
The engine is producing 112 lbft torque @ 6000rpm and 102 lbft @ 3000rpm, 132 BHP, 3.1 diff and has straight cut drops. I know the turbo boys are producing more power and using helical drops, but how likely would I end up winding the idler gear into the casing if I went helical? I don’t want to risk ruining the gearbox casing but the noise of straight cuts is wearing. I built it many years ago before digital cameras were common place so never took any photos of the build. Now I have it out I'm taking loads. Apart from the pressure plate change I plan to machine the center cap to take a bronze thrust washer so it'll stand up better to the mini clutch pressure, which is also part of he reason I want to change to an orange pressure plate. It's 1700cc 711M. Great to work on in an escort but very tight in the mini:)
Thanks"

Is that your oil pickup point at the bottow of the box? Then straight into the dry sump pump?
I still haven't figured out what to do regarding oil pickup.

Hi All and Hello, the above engine photo is mine.
I've only recently joined this forum so sorry for the delay in reply Vegard. I assume by your comment you are building one?
The oil pickup is on the bottom corner of the gearbox but it all depends on how you intend to use the dry sump pump as to how it is plumbed in.
I'm using a 5 port scavenge pump from Burton which is the same as a Titan pump.
If you are using an external oil tank then you can follow the normal plumbing that came with the pump.
If you use the mini gearbox to contain the oil you need different plumbing depending on which pump you have. You can't just connect it to the scavenge side of the pump or it will blow the oil filter seal.

I wasn't thinking of using a tank.
So, you're using this?

What about this one?

Would that work? We only really need a section side, and a pressure side....

Yes I'm using the 5 port pump.
I guess you could use the 3 port, I've never tried it but in my case I don't have the room for it.
