As far as slipper pistons are concerned, I think its a case of how slipper your pistons are.
You couldn't use a button on something like this

I have 7.5 mm from the "flat" to the bore, and need an extra 1mm as the pin is below flush in the piston

Mark, they would be pushing the friendship for Teflon Buttons for sure though with the right grade of Aluminum, you'd be OK

Yes Simon, had the same brainwave earlier! Do the rods not survive fully floating when running the pins straight into them without a bronze bush? Was thinking about honing the small ends and putting an oil hole in the top.
My bike survives quite happily at 12,000 rpm plus steel to steel as it were.

That's all I do. 0.0005" to 0.0008" Clearance.
