Building a legal Gp1 car from a full spec Gp2 car and using more than its ID would be virtually impossible.Simon776 wrote:Building a Group 1 car for the Tour de France when starting with a Group 2 car wouldn't require much more than removing the arches and alloy panels. The alloy doors from 550G were used on OBL 45F and presumably the bonnet and boot.

I think you're right Tim though they often tested at Thruxton. Another Silverstone test....for the '69 Tour Auto:

Re: Later Works Minis
Great pics of OBL and 560 on the Tour. I had not seen either before. Car 10 was not a works car was it but there is a glimpse of 550 number 12 in the pic of 560. Bring on any more Tour pics chaps! Cheers

Re: Later Works Minis
1970 Spa 24hrs, Rhodes/Mabbs in car No. 72, registered LRX 827E, engine failure forced retirement as it did the year previous for the same team in RJB 327F. Looks a lot like the car Marshall's/Baldwin bought from the works? (colour shot)
LRX 827E then appeared on this rally car, another one registered in the early 90's....

Which begs the question....were those number plates put on the later race cars just for fun (seeing as the rally car was already supposedly disposed of), to make them look more like a road car (only on the rear though?) or did they actually carry the chassis plate and documentation of the earlier rally cars officially in order to take them across European country borders (remember them??) to continental races.

Re: Later Works Minis
Thanks Pete those are great shots. The red panel on the front gives a high chance of that being Peter Baldwins car. I wonder what registration number he thought he had! Was not car 73 up for sale a few months ago for £95,000? You would want some clarification as to providence laying out that sort of money. I am away at the moment away from Mr records but I seem to think this car was LBL 606D. Forgive me if I am wrong. Cheers. Brian

I did ask him at an MCR Bournemouth weekend when he did a Q&A session many years ago but LRX 827E didn't ring a bell with him.The red panel on the front gives a high chance of that being Peter Baldwins car. I wonder what registration number he thought he had!
This is 827E on its last 1969 outing @ Salzburg - Morris badging, red band on the grille and longer central bonnet strap than LBL 666D.

Another great pic I have never seen before. Thanks Simon. I wonder how many of these works cars were subsequently beaten to death as rally cross cars. I don't really want to know the answer to that.

Re: Later Works Minis
I've a picture somewhere of an ex race car being rallycrossed at Cadwell by John Rhodes in late 1969, still with the number plate on it - think it is an LBL 666D. I'll try and find it.

Re: Later Works Minis
Roger Platt posts on British Rally Forum Historic Rally thread. Might be worth posting there to try and get the full story? (Did Russell Brookes own OBL45F then? They were mates).

Re: Later Works Minis
This auction blurb does mention 45F being rallied after being leaving Coopers Of Oulton (who had several works Minis through their hands) but doesn't mention Platt by name :
