Nice work in there!

This car is similar to early Mk3 ( 850 / 1000 ) found here in Portugal... except for the front indicators and heater. Our early Mk3 had plastic heaters.
regarding the date build, our cars had toggle switches till end of 1970 , and the two boot badge combination ( Morris + 850 ) lasted till beginning of 1972... where this single badge type was introduced:

and the Assembly Plant... don't you have a letter after the body number ? like 'XA2S228609 S' ? Mk3 cars built in Portugal and Spain have 1 or 2 letters after the Body number to identify the Assembly Plant ( 'S' for Portugal 'ZA' Spain ) .

Hi Luis,

Good to hear from other mk3 owners!

My heater is also made from plastic, maybe it looks different?

Also no letters after the body number, there is also nothing more on the registration papers.

regards,

Jeroen

UK market 850's only had the single speedo, not the 1000 type three instrument oval instrument cluster although from late 1978 we did have an 850 Super with the three dials.
There were a few 850/1000 cars around from the mid sebenties with the standard UK 'MINI 850' and 'MINI 1000' badges ion the boot but a single 'Austin' or 'Morris' badge fitted above - these badges were Allegro/Marina items and I've no idea why these cars had them.

I had a few early seventies 850's with the magic wand gearchange. They were okay, and the post 1974 850 with the bigger 1.5 inch SU went very well.

Nice project. It looks very similar to my mk3 1000. Mine has mk2 interior light, boot handle, earlier toggle switches and centre start. Regestered 1st of Jan 1971 so I'd guess 70 for manufacture.

My Belgium built MK4 (mid / late 70's) had Cibie headlights, so the rims are slightly different with 2 holes on the underside. Think there were bi directional for UK or Europe. The body plate was on the crossmember under one of the seats.

The body tag should state were it was built viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1946&start=1940
Rough dates can be picked up from glass and other items that are date stamped.

I'd guess opening rear windows, clocks, indicators and heater are for the local market.

That is fantastic work. I so wish I had the skill and ability (not to mention facilities) to carry out work to that standard.
Keep up the good work!

Hi Jeroen, great to see your car on here! It's a real gem and in good hands! I know a guy not to far away from you has an 850 mk3 from 1970 with the same indicator lights, maybe he can help you date it. I'll send you a pm.

Looking at the first pics of the car there wasn't a radiator shroud... Didn't think of that before... Too bad no one mentioned it before paint ;)

But thanks for the comments!
