The building of cars from log books has gone on for years . The dvla don't care . It's not just a mini thing though . Did anyone see the programme with the silver auto union race car ? And what about that Bugatti found in the lake ? . Thing is we would all be tempted if we came across a mk1 S log book . .... It's the blatant MPI minis on 60s log books that get me ...... Ken

Thing is we would all be tempted if we came across a mk1 S log book.

Thing is, you are of course correct, but few people will admit it.

However if someone is going to try a bit of resurectionism, it's not a great idea to start with a log book that has been splattered across the internet.

As you say, the ones that really yank my chain are the straight forward swaps designed to hide the true identity of a stolen car or fraudulently avoid paying road fund tax.

Yes, you just know that there's an Multi Point Injection 1960 'reshelled in the late sixties' and 'upgraded' with modern components coming to an auction site near you..

I thought that this was illegal anyway to effectively advertise (and sell) a V5 without the accompanying vehicle. I'm not sure a pile of rusty brake parts and a cylinder head count..

V5 swaps for tax exemption also happen in other classic vehicles which cross over the cut-off date relatively unchanged in 'laymans terms', such as Land Rovers, early Range Rovers, MG Midgets, Triumph Spitfires, etc.
The Triumph world has quite a few "1500cc" Spitfires (1974-80) that purport to be tax-exempt pre-1972 "Mk4" 1275cc cars (1970-74).
also common in the world of early post 1972 Range Rovers, ALL Land Rovers, post 1972 rubber bumper MGB's and Midgets with chrome bumper conversion kits.....although now the date is 'rolling' again these examples will soon become tax exempt anyway.....but the Mini's long production run means it will carry on for a few years yet I guess. The early V5's are also used to import younger Mini's into the USA under their 25 year old rules, where such Mini's are know as Re-VIN's.

This '1958' Landrover Defender 90, Soft top, 300tdi, Tax exempt made some LR enthusiasts laugh/angry a few years back.....as it was a bit more than an engine swap and more like a complete later vehicle swap!

"This is for my landy its a 1958 landrover which has been fully uprated to be like a 98 defender with the 300 tdi engine and lots more."

unbelievable.....
I just bought a NOS roll of seat webbing rubber which is the same cream coloured rubber material but wider from a UK vendor so I can remake my one but I think I might knock out some more in the process :)

That is so obvious a fake bid. The high bidder had 100% history with the seller & had made 1 bid previously.

Bloody ridiculous.

As has been said above you can buy Pirelli webbing by the roll & make your own.

If you read the back of a V5, you will see the document belongs to DVLA and that if you do with it what you shouldn't you can get a massive fine and potentially end up in prison.

This appears to be an example of toothless tiger.

Although I have heard people say this on forums, there is nothing I can see on the current V5c which specifically says the document belongs to DVLA, it mentions a fine or prosecution may result for failing to tell DVLA of a sale or transfer by filling in relevant sections and returning to DVLA. Maybe the wording changed when it became 'harmonised' with European reg documents?

Could be. I think it is an area where the authorities don't care.

Last saw that for sale at Mini United in 2009. Pity someone's cut a bloody great hole in the roof since then  and filled it with what looks like a Rover Mini Open roof.

Callington is up the road from me. There is a quarry somewhere with a partially buried Mk1 cooper in it. Looked but never found. Lots of quarries.

That is a lot for that car. £5k. Seriously?
