I think this is what's cheesed the owner of the original GRX 309D off, that his car's been discounted as a "discarded shell" when in fact it's probably more complete than either of those two when 'found', yet they've both got works numbers plates back on their bonnets in the photo but he's not allowed his. Understandable really. So what were both registrations when found?

It was very well presented at Beaulieu, and the story about the car on the old MCR forum was fascinating, I had great admiration for the author at that time. Can / will anyone answer the question, " What was the registration number of the car when it was found as a shopping car at the side of the road in Abingdon ?"
While on the subject of LRX cars ( found at the side of the road in Abingdon ), Ron Crellin told me today how he enjoyed the time that Gary Corpe took him for a spin in the re..stored LRX 827E back in the 90's.

Thanks for that InimiaD, that was the pic I had in mind. There was also an article on LRX 827E when it belonged to Gary Corpe in ( probably ) Miniworld in the 90's. Can anyone date that issue please ?
Cheers

perfect...have now purchased a copy. If only I'd known about that article a few months ago as Garry Corpe restored the car I have, which he did alongside LRX....and I've (plus people who actually know what they're doing) now just finished restoring it again. I spoke to him a while back and he can't remember much about any of the cars he's tampered with over the years! This would have been a good source of info...

Got my copy today and just re-read the story of the discovery of the LRX cars in 1988. Great story and good detailed photos of the restored 827E. Anyone with an interest in the more recent history of Works minis should try to see it.

From what I remember that MW article and the story by Peter Laidler in an old copy of the MCR mag pretty much explain how they were both found in Abingdon without any rally kit and non works number plates on, 827 with an 850 engine in. In the context of those finds there's a certain irony about Paul's GRX 309D being termed as merely a 'discarded shell'.

In comparison to the discovery of the original GRX 309D there are close similarities to the discovery of these two cars in 1988. The MW article states that ( LRX 827E ) 'was now fitted with an 848cc engine and carried a different registration mark'. The detailed photographs show a lack of body number on the front panel, so we can assume that this has been replaced. Also, 'Guy ( Smith ) was able to have the original numbers re-allocated to the CARS' is an interesting quote as according to the Browning book, 829E was sold to BMC Australia, just as 309D was sold to BMC USA. I / we are obviously interested to know how this re-allocation worked. I am led to believe that, as 309D, 829E also retains its 'all important' body number. I would like to see the article that was published in the MCR mag about the discovery of the LRX cars if anyone can help please. Fantastic, very interesting history on some fantastic cars.

Anyone know which mcr mag the article was in, or perhaps could someone do a quick scan of it? I'd like to see the article as well

I'll have a dig about for the MCR mag, might take some time though as I can't even remember which year it was. Early 90s I think.

That's obviously early on. First three stages were Bramham, Harewood and Croft. I'd guess Croft, which was nothing like its great days as a race circuit then and had some pretty rough bits (I seem to remember heading for a massive pile of rubble at one point).

It's supposedly the '67 Marathon GRX 5D, as can be seen from this rear shot it looks like a Mk1.

'67 Marathon car..

Same as the '67 Tour de Corse?

There's probably a book in the history of that number plate alone!
