But of course the experts who could stop it will just sit on their hands as usual with the standard statement that “well everybody knows about that” and “it’s a lovely car” which we all know and nobody disputes. Nuff said.

The prices seem mostly overshot - to avoid the term "ridiculous" - on the other hand, the estimate of Maserati Merakis very "moderate" - it's RHD sadly.
Beautiful super car.
This means a Mk1 Cooper S roughly costs the same as a Maserati Merak - "Livin in a mad world"

Can agree your thoughts Minikin.. just one issue try to get spare parts for the Mazzer .. when almost all Mini parts are available (even if some are not quite right) this helps with values .. Just another aspect i suspect there is going to be a reduction in the value of UK Classic Cars, the November Auction at the NEC will show if this prediction is correct.

A Maserati Merak is a lovely car.......for someone else to own. You've got that V6, Citroen hydraulics, questionable reliability, woeful parts availability.......no thanks. One of my favourite cars but you need very, very deep pockets.

Like all that stuff, you're waiting for 'that' unhealthy noise.

If you're going down the 'but I can buy a......' route, you can have a mid naughties Porsche 996 Turbo, a car that was properly built and would eat that thing for breakfast and come back for seconds. £35,000 will buy a healthy one, £45,000 a superb example.

I was loaned one when my cars gearbox was being replaced. It was the worst car I'd ever driven the rev counter and fuel gauge were linked, one went clockwise the other went the other way at the same rate! Stank of petrol and a mini 850 overtook me on a dual carriageway.

Minis, given a modicum of maintenance, are extremely reliable although the quality* of some new parts now won't help. They are generally quite an easy ownership proposition unless you start improving* too much.

A couple of interesting things at the next Anglia auction.

First up is a 1973 Clubman saloon that looks like something worth preserving as it is. It's had MoT spec welding in the past, but on top it looks solid. Replace the bits where Fred Flinstone has stuck his feet through, a couple of sills and door steps, mechanically recommission and you've got a magnet for admirers at the next car show.

Next is a Mk2 era van. This looks like it needs the whole floor replacing as it has had numerous bodgey repairs. It would be a labour of love, but then how many Mk2 era vans are about?

Noticed a real trend lately that competition stuff just isn’t selling very well. Silverstones sale at the Classic had lots unsold. I wonder if the current real world price of a used race car is maybe more £35k ish?

They still cost £60k to build a fresh one! I think the detail is everything. Some of these older race cars can look abit tired and knocked about after a few seasons, soon become out of date (especially gearbox’s) and sometimes the engines can be abit of an unknown quantity if they’ve not got a recent dyno read out,

I do quite like it, but it is a bit tired (as others have said) and does have a personality disorder, is it a rally car or a track car ?

I think the upside-down door card has held it back, it really annoys a lot of people that small detail.

The belts expired in 2014, so has everything else safety related probably. Is the cage up to latest blue book spec. Also, if the belts are 2014, how long is it since the engine has been run properly. The value is what a good rolling shell is worth, maybe £20,000-£25,000.

South West have a couple of interesting lots in their sale next weekend.

First up is a 1959 Austin 850 that was originally sent to Portugal. According to a heritage certificate it was sent out without an interior to avoid purchase tax. The description suggests that the replacement floors are a bit iffy, but with an estimate of £10,000-£12,000, it could be a cheap way into 1959 ownership with a little bit of unusual history.

Some people might think I'm a bit daft mentioning this, but they have a tidy looking Allegro Estate. In typical '70s Vermillion, with black velure interior, it looks just ready for going to B&Q to pick up the wallpaper and paint. Also it's a 1300, so no worries about the engine, and with a bit of tuning could be a bit of a sleeper. The other thing is, it's about a fifth the price of a Mini Clubman Estate in similar condition.
