Well I think the Mathewson’s car, which became probably the most quoted auction result of recent times has just been blown out of the water by this absolutely astounding result!

Almost £55k after fees.

Did look a beauty……

Lots of money, but it does seem very honest, even down to its cover sills and paint

£54,050 after fees, say about £20,000 to restore the body to get rid of that 40 year old 2-pack blister paint job, and the inevitable filler that has been smoothed off around the front end. Never mind finding anything in the engine and box that may need replacing.


Is a restored 1071 worth £75,000, because this car is far from original so is going to need work.

Agreed, as an investment it will never fly.....it is what you would expect of a car put away that long ago though....

I didn’t spot anything that would call into question its provenance though ...that in its self is quite a rare thing. Maybe that explains the price ?

Either needs to be left virtually as-is or it’ll turn into a mega expensive bottomless pit. Either way two people really wanted it. In fact it was three!

I know, what I meant was it had not been repainted, blistering was there still there....

And to make that 1071 look expensive, the '66 998 did not sell. It was only bid to £21,500, short of the estimate/reserve of £25-30,000.

The Hagerty UK Valuation Tool shows a Concours Valuation for a 1071S at £50,300 .. but what do i know about classic car values

Now showing as sold so must have sold after the auction for the top bid.

H&H have a couple of Mk1 Coopers coming up. Both look nice and tidy with just the odd incorrect detail, both have horrid black underseal under the arches, and both are estimated at £20-24,000.

Also in the H&H sale is a freshly restored 1981 Pick-Up. It's very shiny on the outside, but whoever did it decided to use some kind of different finish inside the bed. I think it's a bit pricey for a late commercial at £14-16,000

I followed this car from when it was first entered into the auction back in July, radio interviews with the vendors family etc and did in fact look over the car on the preview day and took around 70 images, I also registered to bid by phone. The bidding took off immediately so much so that each time the telephone guy asked me if I wanted to place a bid it had already gone up by another 1k! It was too hot for me and soon raced out of my range...

The car was special in my view; low owners, mileage, not messed about with the seats would clean up like new. I think that there must have come a day when the car required a freshen up and there were multiple smallish patch welds in the usual places, they looked like a typical 80's weld job i.e. welds had not been dressed to remove their appearance and were all heavily protected by a painted on grease - likely at the same time it had the repaint. I couldn't fathom as to why the front panel cut outs were different.

My guess would be that it would cost around 10k to deal with panels and paint. 1k to make good the interior and a full strip down to replace all rubber items in the running gear, bearings, seals etc in fact a simple refresh....

The rally prepped Mk2 S did not sell, so bidding obviously did not get to the lower estimate of £25,000. Bit on the pricey side, but it does look clean and tidy.

MK3 s - do any buyers do a DVLA check? Quite interesting that it was registered as a Morris in 1970. 2 MOTs. ???? Caveat emptor.

A lot of the early mk3’s were still registered Austin or Morris. My current early 71 is and my first ever Minbin, a late 70 J reg was the same back in the late 80’s.
