There can't be any other marque that suffers so much from the possibility of people adding a bullshit piece of paperwork to make out a connection, no matter how tenuous, to the term 'Mini Cooper S' purely to add value to whatever they are selling.
No wonder those old log books change hands for so much money. It's been going on for years, but far from dieing out it seems to be becoming more prevalent. While the cogniscenti can easily spot the fakes, there seem to be enough suckers out there to get caught up in the fakery.
I don't mind proper period re-shells, 'evocation's or replicas or even bitsas that are better specce'd than originals,so long as they are declared, but there's so many chancers trying to gain financially from claiming some kind of provenance in heaps of shit with a Cooper S log book neatly converted into a V5.
You could say it doesn't matter. The buyer get's their 'Cooper S', the seller gets their £30,000 everyone's a winner. But it's the deception that get you.
There can't be any other marque where the deception is so prevalent and easy.
This car is local to me and I have seen it close up. In conversation the owner didn't mention it was a Cooper S, just a nicely souped up mini. Might be because I told him that I own an S??? I did like it and it did sound nice driving off... but I definitely wouldn't pay that much for it.

The irony with these heater valves (there's several variants too.....) is that good quality diaphragms have been reproduced and better still, the valve is simple to strip down to replace it! Won't people ever learn...........
My heater valve has started leaking, where can I get a replacement diaphragm and how do you refurbish and replace it?

How did tis end up in the e-bay thread..........
This has been discussed a few times but one variation of the heater valve looks similar to the MGB type heater valve. The two parts rotate together and........ Anyway the rubber diaphragm part to fix the MGB valve is the same as the diaphragm on the mini valve. You have to take the valve apart by ....... and you're taxing my memory now...... drilling out the small rivet, strip valve down. replace diaphragm clean thoroughly and re-assemble.
I haven't got this type on my 69 S but remember the valve from my MGB GT V8 owning days
Available from the usual MG people such as Moss Bros etc

Looks like a small bore engine. (Heater studs). Not the same as the one in the car and classic ad. Was that just meant to suggest it's possible value?

I think (without looking) that John Parnells Bible quotes some 9FD engine numbers as being 1071 and that number falls in the group. I once had 9FD-SA-H33930 that also is in that group but was also 998 Cooper engine.

You can’t tell an S engine from an “ordinary” Cooper using engine number prefixes. The identification lies in the particular serial numbers that belong to particular batches.
That said it’s obviously a small bore. And 1071s have a “1070” ID plate.

Seller had made a perfectly honest mistake after checking engine number on Minimania.
I messaged him & he is going to relist with correct details.

This is where the confusion of a block with such a number as quoted in the ebay add is mistaken for a 1071 .. until the actual engine block is seen ...

Back in 1984 (I think) I was able to buy my S quite cheaply because I had a copy of “Classic and Sportcar” that printed a table very much like that.
I think it was pretty much the first “classic” car mag to feature the Cooper. Of course there were earlier tech mags (CCC of hallowed memory) but they weren’t interested in mundane topics like engine numbers etc.
Cheers, Ian
Ps .... and apologies to Andrew, when I posted earlier I misunderstood what he was saying

No worries Ian, I’d have posted up that copy of the relevant page in the Bible at the same time as that post but was at work and the book at home. Would have made more sense then
