Getting your mates to put in fake bids to artificially increase the price !!

Its nothing new though as auctioneers have been taking fake bids 'off the wall' for years

I do agree with Pete though in that I cannot for the life of me see why eBay allow private bidding, as you cannot tell who is bidding anymore anyway. Personally I do not bid on anything that has private bidding as I think it has the potential for shill bidding at its worst.

If I was a cynical person :? I may think that EBay started the private bidding system with the thought of shill bidding raising the price on items, therefore raising the listing charges when the said item sells.

That's if I was cynical and mistrusting of a global tax dodging company such as EBay !!!

Hi Craig,

Scroll down a bit, and check the link to a sale, on a set of private plates = viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2313&start=30

It could turn out to become a free MK III S, if one auctioned those TFX plates.

But what a lovely & original car it is 8-) wouldnt touch anything on it ;)

Let's take this with a bloody big dose of reality here.

A Mk3 S with a funny registration plate, £30k?

That's an old mini with a slighly different engine from your auntie's Metro. It's a freaking mini. Mk2 and Mk1 minis are different, they are quite clearly "classic cars". That Mk3 is pretty much the same as my girlfriends old Mini City E....with an MG Metro Engine.

It is completely daft. You have people bidding 120mph speedos up to £500, glass washer bottles for £300, "Bus" Steering Wheels for £250. It has gone insane. These are old mini's for god's sake. Occasionally, you get a bloody nice Mk1 Cooper S rally car (like that one we enjoyed on ebay the other day) which was worth a £25k as it was special. The majority of old minis, including Coopers and Esses are just old minis. It has gone totally silly.

I have pretty much got that car sat in my shed. Most people would not be able to tell the difference. It is a better spec and is in better condition. In total, in the last decade has cost me a nadge over £2k. It's an old mini for god's sake.

Where I live, in Cornwall, we are talking 2 years wages (average wage) after tax to pay for a Cooper S. This is bloody ridiculous IMO.

I can understand it if it was the Peter Sellers car, or the one owned by elvis, or an ex racer, or littered in period rarities, but these are just bog standard old minis. It has gone insane.

When I have mine back on the road, it will be so valuable, I wont be able to enjoy it!

It hasnt sold though! I agree it seems insane especially if you were fortunate enough to buy one years ago but if the reality is that a nice Mk 1 S sells for £25-35k then that is something you cant argue with.
Supply and demand drive this. I suppose the same arguement can be had for the GTO Ferraris that are essentially a lump of (very pretty) tin with archaiec technology and porr reliability yet they often seem to command millions??

PS Can I buy your Mk 1 S for less than £10K??? LOL

PPS that Island blue one is a lovely looking car

PPS It costs a bloody fortune to get the cars to this standard so I suppose that gradually gets factored in as people get ever more finickity about standards. The MCR day demonstrates this as there is barely a banger in site.

I bought my "that one" freshly restored in 2003. It was like new. I paid £1500.

It was a bargain then. It was probably worth £3k.

I am a keen musician, I have played the piano for the last 30 years (jeez, that long). When I was at university in halls of residence, I remember paying £411 for an old Hammond Organ (Jimmy Smith Job) which was out of a crematorium. I sold that for £1800, bought the mini and blew £300 on good times....including a set of dunlop alloys with centrecaps and nuts for £40 and a set of sticky rubber and a 1275 metro engine (pulled the 998 out). Good fun all the way through to 07, which is when I stuck it in the shed and became boring with regular guy transport.

I know some cowboys and some really dirty traders, including a seller of rare mini bits. I have seen reg docs attached to cars, bits and pieces sold on as "genuine" and really, caveat emptor, the chances are that unless you knew Mrs Goggins and your mum new the car from new, it has quite likely been reshelled, re-engined, re-mucked about with, fiddled with, had it's identity swapped like grandad's axe.

I'm sure that '66 is an honest car. I do know that mine would also be, if you bought it from my mate. You'd look at the wiper motor, the glass, the fuel pump sender and all the numbers would match. You'd see the new Newton Interior and all the other new and reconditioned stuff I have added. Then you'd get your wallet out and pay a fortune.

I can put my hand on my heart and honestly say that if you did, you would be a mug. Hobbies are fantastic, because it's irrational and there is so much emotion involved. It is the ideal game to be in, because rich people are just ready to hand over their fortunes for a botched up and fraudulent piece of crap and THEN FEEL REALLY HAPPY ABOUT IT. I suppose if they're smiling, they feel they got value for money.

OK, it's not ebay, but we at the office thought it might be just a tad on the expensive side (obviously from our own points of view)

OK, just a wee bit more on the Danish site

They're very rare parts though Dean (so long as they are as described - original '59 type caps and not Bill's lovely repro ones) and so will command a high price due to high demand.

Personally i would say youre talking a load of bollocks - a MK3 S isnt the same as your girlftiends mini city E, Neither do they have MG Metro engines - and like it or not there worth a bob or two more than a mini city E - each to their own for sure but no need to slag them off - there not ten a penny like mk1s and 2s , they are in fact a pretty rare version of the mini city E -

none the less - 30k for a mk3 is taking the piss, you can have mine for 25
