Has the John cooper connect been verified because the sales stuff certainly make out it was driver regularly by him as back by Mike cooper.. last I saw he was saying this is not correct..

I find I hard to believe brewer saw the reg and instantly remembered the car from a picture that wasn't previously seen much..

It ended up sending for £54k

About £9k inc fees which if it was indeed an S chassis number was a good buy! Even with a Cooper chassis number it was worth a punt with the S lump in it. The blue Mk2 Cooper went for £15k which was also a decent buy. Contrast that with the £48k plus fees that Brewer’s tidy-ish ‘67 Mk1 S fetched at the NEC. That’s £38k for the car and £10k for John Cooper’s palm print on the roof. 😆 Brewer changed his plea on the podium at the NEC to ‘owned by John Cooper Garages” but the auctioneer stuck with the “regularly used by John Cooper for two years” bollocks which the winning bidder clearly believed!
Thanks, £9K all in, is not too bad.
Lets hope whoever bought Brewer’s S , bought it for the the Brewer connection more than the John Cooper connection, or as an investment , they wont see that £48 K again

The £8250 top bid plus fees was ‘very provisional’ and as it only got to Mathewsons last week very few people have seen it. If it is an S I expect it to be in next months sale. :)

Easy, just because the design is that little bit different from the original. Arguably a better car, but not THE original Cooper S.

But a Mk1 Cooper would probably have got to £25,000. I did notice that the Mk2 has lost it's hydro, so not totally original spec, but still. And then there's the way 1275GTs have gone, but the MK2 is still not going into the £20k bracket unless it is an exceptional example.

Regarding that Cooper s I just spoke to the auctioneer. It is an 850 shell, the paperwork says it is Austin but it is badged Morris and it doesn’t run, they don’t know why. Also as it says in the description, it has the fe number as the chassis number. Finally the chassis number is Morris.
I was considering bidding. If anyone else is I suggest they ring up for a chat, the guy was completely up front and honest.

I reckon ALL prices are softening at the moment. A car has to be really exceptional to make really serious money.

Well it only got to £28,000, even at that I think it is too much.

I think Mk2 998 Coopers tend to be cheaper than Mk1s because they not only share a pretty ordinary engine but also feature a pretty plain interior. Bottom rung for Cooper ownership I think. A tastefully modded Mk1 850 would easily fetch the same money if not more!

Definitely something about a modded 850 that is special, especially if it has been modded a while and has a patina... maybe its just brings back youthful memories ? :D

Even though I’m a MK2 owner and proud to be so, I agree with Pete that MK1 are just seen to be more desirable, unfortunately some MK2 parts are as rare as glass washer bottles.. just not as expensive :D

The auction houses are getting greedy too. The H&H auction at Duxford charged 5% sellers fee, and 12.5% buyers fees - both plus VAT.

If you had bought that Copper for £15k, the fees would add on nearly another £3k.

Looking at the results, that Mk2 Cooper was one of the cars that did not ultimately sell. I did notice that many didn't reach the estimate / reserve but subsequently sold, so a few deals were done after the hammer.

I watched a bit of the sale live and noticed that most of the estimates were below the reserve price, with many lots reaching the lower estimate but still being sold provisionally. Only when a lot reached the higher estimate was it sold on the hammer.

And auction houses of all types have become more and more greedy, most non-automotive houses charging 20% or more, plus VAT, to buyers.

The Mk2 was a nice car (despite no hydro and wrong speedo) - its just who is going to pay £18K plus buyer's commission ? I suspect the £15K top bid factored this in...
