Fantastic work rich! its great to see the old photos of it! Makes me want to get started on the mk2 again.... if only i had a workshop....

first
as mentioned elsewhere, heres a picture of the fire extinguisher bracket thats bolted through the factory stamped holes (anorak points 100,000!!!)
the parcel shelf is bent as someone at sometime has booted the extingisher and pushed it all up.

more crash damage is appearing, the second owner had a very small crash, it only broke the dizzy cap and the lights and pushed the front back a wee bit, but, as is always the case, the impact has travelled further back than anyone (at the time) realised.
bit of a lead repair, from where the pointy corner of the passenger wing has pushed the scuttle up - even with the paint on you could see that something wasnt right in this corner - some slidehammer action will sort this out i guess.
cleaned up a bit, its not often that lead repairs are found in a mini!
more creases in the inner wing
here you can see that the door post has rotated a little and opened the gap up between it and the top dash rail - nothing a bit of porta-packing wont sort out!
you can also see that the top dash rail has rusted as it kinked and let the water in through the seal - the windscreen piller is also kinked a little.

i got the rear pocket in & the lower qtr in and sorted. the lower seam will be welded once the car is on the spit - no point rolling around under it!

Do I sense some sort of competition here with Matt and his racer to the road, great job though, what the hell is that bright light coming through the open door, is someone outside with an arc light?
Do you have any of that black and white checker sellotape to put down the sides when it is finished.......
My projects are still languishing at the back of the garage, the house and my Nortons, in that order, have taken over my time at the moment but I have to say between you and Matt your cars are turning out to be a fantastic "how to" on rebuilding a Mini, brilliant, next instalment.

that bright light is daylight, us welders hide away from it...........that and its about minus five outside!

for your pleasure, i present a medley of rotten door posts...........
top dash rail, water has got in past the seal when the rail kinked - an easy repair
lh inner wing - note the home made inner a panel - a bit of tin bent round and welded to the inner wing and a panel. the brace is (i guess) to stop the resulting 'mess' from flapping. the a panel was brazed in little lumps to the door post. a very poor repair, there was a huge gap at the top so water was able just to get behind and fester away
lh inner with the panels removed- looks a mess, but its not a bad area to repair is its mostly flat.
lh a post, you can just see the line of spot welds where the inner wing return spots down the post - as discussed on matts thread.
the rh had, if anything, is worse than the lh!
chipping all the underseal off just makes the holes bigger,,,,,
a unique inner and outer a panel 'combo'! this was brazed down the door edge in about six blobs, and pop rivited down the inner wing with about seven pop rivits. i guess this repair wasnt done long before the car was taken off the road - i doubt it wouldnt have stood up to much useage before the panel started to fret and move about

Impressive, hope you had a good breathing mask and goggles, there must have been a lot of s**t flying around, did you use a rotory brush or a sanding disc?

Ferrous oxide has definately been attacking those A posts, BIG time.
More work, but worth the effort.

cracked on a bit
cheeky push with the porta-pac
i ended up having to weld a brace across as the lower door corner was so weak that it started to rotate around there instead of pushing the top dash rail back. with the brace welded in the push of the porta-pac was far more concentrated in the bulkhead.
before, the lower dash section had also broken away from the door post
after - thats fixed it!
top dash rail cut back and inner wing fixed, quite a complicated repair as it tucks up into behind the scuttle panel

in an ideal world i would have fitted either a full inner wing, or bought a heritage wing and trimmed the back 5" down.
however, this is meant to be a budget rebuild and id quite like to retain the character of the car.
i had the genius idea of modding a mk3 repair panel as the curve part is 99% right for a mk1, it just needs the bend moving.
it went in ok, then needed the rebates for the hinge stiffeners putting in.
it looks a bit bent, but needs a bit more beating yet. the inner and outer panel fit really nice.
not got much more done, thanks to making a stupid mistake.
my new years resolution is to wear goggles no matter what.
i now have one very badly scratched lens - it hurts like hell......

I think we have all learnt the hard way on that one Rich, the biggest single reason I use to not bother was that they get so scratched that you can see nowt through them, since the £ store does them now i have no excuse not to have a good supply around and use them as a consumable.

At one time I was nearly on first name terms with the nurses at the eye hospital, it did'nt seem to matter what eye protection I used I always ended up with something in my eye, in the end I would put up with it during the day and go to the hospital at about 11pm, straight in and out in 10 minutes as aginst a 4 hour wait on different coloured chairs during the day.
