We switched from Dunlop dry tyres to the Firestone 1B19 soon after they first appeared and like many of the Free Formula 850's achieved quicker lap times. Firestone 1B19 6.0x19.3x10 dry tyres on 6x10 Mamba alloys with Dunlop CR65 Mk11 (320) 5.00L-10 used on S reverse rims for the wet.
Our previous Dunlop drys were CR81s, in another Mk1 forum thread 'ivor badger 2' suggested:
"A bit depended on which Dunlop dry you used. IB !9s were probably better than 700 CR81s, but against 900 it was probably personal preference. 900s were probably too wide for an 850. Possibly anything was better than a CR70. Again it ended up personal preference between IB19 and Dunlop slicks or car setup."

This is a dry weather compound developed for the high rate of wear experienced with Minis. This compound is also available in sizes to suit Abarth and Alfa Romeo touring cars for use in long-distance races and is identified by the figures 236 stencilled on the sidewall.

I recently got back in contact with ex-Free Formula Mini racer Simon Ridge who lives local to me and has some great stories and memories of those days, some of which (along with some more photos), I hope he will be able to share with us soon.

In the first photo is that guy driving the Imp wearing a collar and tie? I thought that died out in the 50's!

By a lot of sorting, it is ian maclaren. I think Andy Barton, 3rd from bottom is actually wearing jeans and a nylon shirt, see page 157 of Baggot's book

That website is awesome, brought back so many memories and its amazing how many of the cars I still remember, and as a kid my parents used to load up the car and caravan to spend the weekend at Ingliston, I can remember siting in the stands, watching the like of Cedric Bell, Eric Smith and Andy Barton battle among themselves, was also lucky enough to see Alec Poole in the Complan Mini there, harassing a lot of the bigger machinery....Oct 1970 !, can still remember the Battle with the Muir Camaro to this day !,

(Ive just been through the 1971 pics and a few more of it when it grew its Clubman front end)

back in his Standard 8/10 ?? days, with a tank aerial on the back, he reckoned if he braked "just reet" it'll hit the top back windows of the double deckers, probably the girls school bus local LEG end, but definatley not a snappy dresser.

I could look at those Colin Lourie shots for hours.

Not too keen on the Barbados crash barriers though

Some photos from the Mini 20th Birthday at Donnington 27th August 1979 which included races for the Mini Se7en, Miglia and 1275GT Challenges and Autocross. What I do remember is the crowds who had been able to wander around open parts of the circuit during the earlier show events, then proved difficult for the marshalls to move back behind the barriers when the actual Mini racing started!

Before and after the 1275GT Challenge racing, Steve Harris race winning Mini wrecked in an incident with Steve Soper:

Monty Guildford 850cc Mini-Imp 1973
Some may remember I posted this in a seperate Mk1 thread a couple of years back but thought such a unique Mini also deserved to be included here).


I remember this Mini-Imp well and recently discovered this thread with some photos on the Ten Tenths Forum:-

Monty Guildford's Mini racer fitted with an Imp engine, he finished it in 1973 after an 18 month build.
The engine was built and tuned by George Bevan but the gear box was designed by my Monty and built by Peter Wise of Goodland engineering of Tonbridge Kent. The crank was a one off. Note also the exhaust coming out of the nearside A panel!

Checked your other photos from Donington on photobucket and found my brother and his family on one of them !!, he's the guy on the right of the picture in the light coloured sweater, the little boy holding his hand is his son Rob and the other child, in the pushchair is his other son Ian, both have now won racing championships in their own right, David's wife Jane can just be seen holding the pushchair. The lady between the children is our late Mother, a real family day, brilliant, thanks for posting.
I was there too, probably keeping an eye on the Mini 1000 Challenge car we had got there. I have attached some photo's from that day that were taken by an old friend of ours who sent them to me a long time ago and came flooding back when I saw yours.
