A guy on the Miniforum who goes by the user name 'Oldskoolcool' posted this (in 2014) about the two Minis in my photos above............
'I can shed a bit more light on the subject. The Clubman with the big arches was built by my father (Peter Hill), it was raced by himself from 1975 to 1978.
It originally was a Mini miglia (998). In 1977 he was able to obtain some set of tyres from the Tyrell 6 wheeled F1 car .
These were fitted to 8x10 Mamba solar 3 piece split rim wheels .The front brakes were also from the Tyrrell, these were huge vented discs that were x-drilled and pegged with copper rods. The calipers were modified alloy F3 GR units with Cortina brake pads. Probably the first vented disc set up inside 10s.
The arches were hand made and were originally polished alloy and looked a hell of a lot better! He only ever raced the car once with those arches on, as the scrutineers were not very impressed. He sold the car in 1978 to build a brand new Miglia. The other Clubman was his brothers (Charles Hill) old Miglia that was also running with the Tyrell tyre set up'............
Jim Dineen the son of Neil Dineen is doing a search for old photos for an upcoming birthday. If anyone has any other photos of him or Pete Crouch and / or the car they would be most welcome.mab01uk wrote: ↑Sun Jan 22, 2017 11:41 pmI posted these photos on the Ten Tenths Motorsport forum some time back and a recent reply from Mike Parker as quoted below has added some interesting info on the Longman built 850cc short stroke engine as used by Neal Dineen and Peter Crouch:-
"Hi there
My name is Mike Parker. I was racing in the late 60's/ early 70's. Triplex, Osram GEC special saloon car chmpionships etc etc.The longman short stroke engine that was used by Neal Dineen and Peter Crouch was in fact my short stroke engine. It was built by Richerd Longman. It had a Gordon Allen billet steel crank, with from memory a 51mm stroke running on plus 100 thou cooper s bore. Unfortunately the engine did not work well so I blueprinted the camshafts (649's) I got a perfect camshaft on the sixth one and even then had to havr the keyway remachined to ensure the cam was perfectly timed . I also had Chris Tyrell do the head for me from memory it was 11cc. I also fitted electronic ignition. To cut a long story short the car was written off on the first lap of the championships paddock at Brands. The light weight shell was absolutely amazing. I had the shell built on a chassis rig and the front bulkhead raised 100mm which in effect lowered the car 100mm lower than any other car, the floor pan was removed and replaced by a SHS platform chassis clad in 26 g aluminium The rear subframe was removed and replaced with a rose jointed beam axle. The car had a 54 ton steel roll cage in it with side intrusion bars. You could lift the back of the car up with the driver in the car. It was a stunning lightweight car and would no doubt have been unbeatable . Regards Mike"

There is also a '1980's Mini Racing' thread on the TenTenths motorsport forum (link below) which may also be worth asking for info:-itsagoodalife wrote: ↑Mon Jan 25, 2021 8:33 am I have a mini 7 that was owned , built and raced by Bob Sayer , i was told Bob used to work for special tunning at Longbridge. Car was a mk1 delux then wrote off in 1978, reshelled into a mk2 cooper s sprayed dark purple and wore number 31 1980 it was rolled at silverstone then underwent some factory love at Abingdon including jigging the shell was then painted blue and ran under number 49 then in 1981 a engine failure and that’s all I know , does anyone have any more info on this car as would love to know more
Yes sorry it was a miglia spec in number 31 !ivor badger 3 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 25, 2021 5:50 pm 31 looks more like mini miglia spec. Guess there was no RAC stewards signature for that race.
Thanks , car was restored and me and my father have purchased to hillclimb and sprint it , I have the last engine built by the late Rob Selby in it on a jack knight gearbox ... I will get some photos up once we have done a few bits to it
