The following will help with colours and trim for all 1969 -1980 Minis, including 1275GT. You should read it in conjunction with the paint cards to get some idea of the dates. If you look at the options there you will see when certain colours and trims were available with what other BL car models.

a) wrong servo and brackets
(b) wrong inner wings (should be no holes)
(c) wrong bonnet prop and bonnet prop position - it is on the wrong side for a 1970
(d) wrong washer bottle - shouldn't have Tudor on it
(e) wrong engine colour - should be green on a 1970 without any rocker cover sticker other than a leyland logo sticker on the front.
(f) wrong rocker cover - early 1970 1275GTs had a spout
(g) no hydro
(h) carbs are twin HS4s - an option with the "Pluspac"
(i) wrong wheels - should be 10" rostyles
(j) wrong seats - later type recliners fitted. If it was a 1970 with recliners the lever would come out of the side of the base with a cream knob
(k) wrong seat covers - it should have the early more thickly padded stitched type not the later, flatter electrically welded type
(l) wrong heater - an early 1970 has a plastic cased heater with a bright metal edge to the control panel
(m) wrong eyeball vents - they should be chrome and of the early type (with the small "toothpaste tube" type knob in the middle)
(n) wrong carpets - should be veltone
(o) rear bins should be covered in black vinyl)
(p) wrong seatbelts - should either be Kangol magnet with BL logos or early Kangol arrow static with the central floor mounted twin buckle
(q) wrong interior light - an early 1970 would have a late Mk2 type interior light mounted at the side
(r) wrong boot handle - an early 1970 generally has a MK2 type boot handle
(s) wrong rev counter - an early 1970 has a 6000 rpm red lined rev counter - the 6500 came in when the final drive ratio was changed later in production.
(t) no body number or FE number

I always understood that to be the case too, the 6.5k ones are certainly rarer and have the older style PCB connections etc
I think you are right - got my numbers the wrong way round! My car is in bits at the moment so hard to check!


Also, would a mid 70 have a metal or plastic air cleaner casing ?
Mine (March 1970) has a metal one - not sure when the changeover happened (or indeed if there was the usual Longbridge randomness with some later cars being fitted with earlier spec items found in the stores! My July 1967 built Mk1 850 was a classic example - it had chrome piano hinge rear side windows rather than the stainless ones....

Some time in mid to late 1970 as far as I can work out. It is rather like the bonnet hinges. 1969 built cars had bonnet hinges that bolt up into tapped threads in the bonnet framework. By the beginning of 1970 this had switched to the usual arrangement - bonnet hinges with threaded studs sticking out and flanges with oblong holes welded to the bonnet framework. Not sure why - perhaps there were problems with threads stripping, the bonnet slipping in the open position or it was just very hard to adjust! Its another of those early production quirks. My GT built early March 1970 has the conventional arrangement.

Yes the displacers should be silver banded.

Early cars had a dynamo with cut out box on the firewall.

Its interesting that black was the standardised interior trim option in 1969-70 across all exterior colours (like the Mk2 Cooper / Cooper S I guess). Also interesting that Teal Blue isn't on the exterior colour published list for that year (my car was that colour from new) yet there is a Motorgraphs Longbridge production line photo from late 1969 early 1970 with an Antelope and a Teal Blue car. Presumably things had already begun to fall apart by then!

Question.....did all GT's have the solid casting engine block?
Read somewhere that they did......
However, I saw one with the AEG312 thick flange open tappet block.
