Polishing ally kickplates

Post by snoopy64 »

:?
Hi, anyone tried polishing up the aluminium kickplates?

Tried a few polishing kits to get scratches etc out but no joy...are they plated by any chance??
Cheers

Yes, they are plated, so no chance to polish. I tried it too several times without success.

I believe they are bright anodised rather than plated. Theoretically you could strip the anodising (using caustic soda or similar) then polish the aluminium. In practice, it would be a lot of work.

Scale of hardness is your friend. Aluminium oxide (anodising) is one of the hardest substances around, so you have to strip that first then polish then re-plate.

Hi guys

On the case with my friendly anodiser, may even cheat with some bright nickel instead :)

At this rate you'll be writing to the DVLA and changing your reg number from SCV to OCD!

Can't wait to see it when it's finally all back together ;)
