I replaced my stolen van and stuff and the acute need to raise funds via the mini went away. However, it was on ebay and when it sold, I had a duty to proceed with the sale. Thankfully, the chap was not impressed that it had been repaired in the past. This was great, because selling it was going against the grain.... However, in good sportsmanship, I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has a very good Mk1 shell/donor (like restored or good-original) in order to pass the info on to the buyer, who was a very nice chap and came a long way.

I have read cynical views about ebay on here and thought "that's a bit unnecessary". Recently, I have been messed around, dealt with in the most disgraceful manner, ripped off, taken the mickey out of and realistically, it seems that hard times have really brought out the very worst in people. Furthermore, it appears that "nice people" who expect to deal fairly, to understand a description and receive goods without any catches, fiddling, disappointment or misrepresentation are fair game.

I think a sensible thing to do is not to sell any high value items on ebay. I think it's also a very good idea to ask the question "does the person selling this appear to be a bit of a gypsy/dealer/vermin" and if so, ignore the item, no matter how fantastic it is.

It seems not just limited to classic car scenes, it seems many collectibles/hobbies have been infiltrated by the very worst of people....but it's nice to sometimes be proved wrong.

It's time ebay pulled it's socks up....perhaps with the aid of nanny state.

Item number 261863004783 - a new old stock Irvin seatbelt. Close but not the exact works type (that had a scissor clamp on the end of the shoulder strap part with the Harley Blue adjuster to attach to an eye bolt in the rail beneath the rear window) and small Irvin snap connectors on the other two ends. This one has the removable Rover P6 / Hillman Hunter type fittings...

I can sort of see why people ask silly prices for NOS Irvin belts & the like, these are very rare & were expensive even when new. It's duff stuff like that badge that makes me chuckle / Gag!

It is the real thing, but in very poor condition.

It measures 10.5 x 7.5cm not 6 x 3.5cm like the fake.

When that van is completed the only thing original will be the engine & gearbox unit with the chassis plates and V5c document. We have seen this so often one has to ask themselves who is fooling who? That van will be less than 5% original and most likely the buyer has a shell prepared ready for that identification switch.

The Mini world is riddled with this nonsense which puts question marks over genuine cars. Lets be honest that Mini van is a box of parts and should not be seen as other.

Unfortunatly not everyone can own totally original minis , or persuade the wife to spend £30.000 on a 50 year old mini .so take on projects like this ,it's not illeagal to reshell a car, I used to reshell South Yorkshire police cars at a ford main dealer in the 80s .obvously this one would need a doner shell , which will probably have been extensively restored , new complete floors and panels ect with little of an original pick up in it ,similar to shells for E types / healeys which are sold as new but in fact contain original bulkheads and hard to reproduce pressings ,not that you will be told this!.
I don't see any profit in doing that mini pick up ,or see how it's a theat to a totally original one .anyone buying mini should always ask an enthusiast to check it out and not to take the word of who's selling. Just as allways been the case for any old car .but to try and stop people restoring basket cases in my opinion would be wrong , and ruin this hobbie as only collectors who have had original cars for years would have owt.....just my thought.....Nick

If reshelling didn't go on now or in the past I think it's safe to say that half of the 'concourse' and magazine cover cars wouldn't exist! Of all the classic car folk in this country it seems 'us Mini types' fret over it far, far more than anyone else does, look at the MGB lads and lasses, Heritage shells have been available for donkey's years and no-one bats an eyelid. As mentioned above, how many E-Types would still be knocking around if they hadn't been rebuilt with complete new bulkhead / tub and front end subframe assemblies? Not that many I'll wager. My car has been reshelled into another Cooper shell and restored twice in the space of forty five years - so what! Granted, I'm not keen on Mk1s or 2s being reshelled into Mk3 etc but it happened a fair bit in the '70s because that's just how it was. Manufacturers used to stockpile bodyshells (maybe they still do), the Ford dealership I worked at for a while in the '80s had no end of Fiesta, Escort, Sierra and P100 bodies out the back waiting to be used for insurance work.

Life is way too short to worry about it.

I myself am unfortunate enough to not ever have had an abundance of free cash or availability of a decent Mini at a good price. I have always built my cars from the worst scrammel out there that I could pick up cheap. The two half decent cars I have had my fingers on were in fact my brother's and when they rusted out too badly the TR4 got reshelled. My brother kept it and the Frogeye was given to me. Now I've spent 10 years rebuilding it, but alas, it's far from original. I guess I'm just one of those poor saps who doesn't deserve to own a pristine Mini because I didn't buy one new and park it in a garage or because I can't convince the wife that we don't have to pay the mortgage for the next half year.

Many of them end up over here or in Asia...

I think that first buyer has got good friends who advised them to wise up. Some years ago I had a friend who bought a new Chrysler PT Cruiser and when another friend pointed out the front and rear wheels were a different size he became paranoid and thought we were all laughing at him. He sold it within weeks and never mentioned it again. I must admit I have not stopped laughing at this yellow thing all day.
