I've never heard anyone question that Guy. A lot of this is about perception, when auction houses describe (and I've fallen foul of this many a time to be honest writing bits and bobs) a car doing a long list of rallies, winning this and that, more often than not that list involved several newly built cars with the same reg number on as we discovered with discussion about the first 309D, and that number was only in use for a year. Reg numbers were swapped for publicity purposes, Morris for Austin, numbers even stuck on race cars, you name it. You can appreciate the achievements back then and the cars now rebuilt but you can also appreciate how difficult it is to take "the car's" history literally as a single entity.Smithmaps wrote: What matters is honesty, and I have never misrepresented it. I think it's all cars, not just Minis with interesting / high profile / high value histories that get swept into the same bracket where someone, somewhere will try to make claim that will inflate it's value / provenance no matter how much information is available on it's true past, as people have pointed out this is often not the person / enthusiast that may have saved an important car (no matter how much or little there was of it to start with, with some notable exceptions to this!) then sold it on with full disclosure of what it is, it's the high profile sellers 3 or 4 owners and 20 years down the road when the car is worth 4 or 5 times the original selling price who list histories as if the car that exists now is the one that did all the rallies / races on the list, when information and pictures are available without much effort will show that it isn't.
It all comes down to the buyer being happy with the amount of money they are parting with and the history of what they are buying, if they are then that's what which ever car it is will sell for.
