59 Handbrake Cable Tubes

Any tips on replacing early 59 handbrake cables when they are seized in the tubes and frayed in order to maintain originalty. First thoughts are unfortunately it may be necessary to cut a slot along the outside length and slot in new cables?

Will you re use the cables ? (cast ends) if so, why not make a new tube.

Are the tube big enough to go over the long adjuster screw ?

if it is, slide a new tube on, then fill it with sand, and heat it up, and bend the tube into shape.

Do the early cables come as an assembly with tubes already fitted?

Geoff explains the problem on Dave's 59 restoration in greater detail below:-

"You can't just make new tubes and slide them on. They are 3/16" steel bundy with a flare at one end. Easy to make with a brake pipe bender and flaring tool but the problem is at one end you have the fork which the clevis pin fits through and at the other end you have the long threaded adjusting stud and neither will pass through the tube. The fittings at each end it appears are not removable so I either need to find a way of removing one and re-fitting or cut a slot in the tube."

Would it be possible to use a Mini van / estate handbrake cable by firstly, cutting off the clevis end,feed on the cable tube, cut the cable to the desired length and get one of those bespoke cable making places to crimp the fork end fitting back on the end of the cable. ?
It depends if the fitting under the fork is available separately.
Not having measured one up I'm not sure if the quadrant nipple would be in the wrong position even though it is not needed.
