Sorting through the bits for my car yesterday afternoon turned up a few more November '61 dated parts, including the Lucas coil. I'm sure it was the fitted to the car and was working twenty years ago but in the likely event that it's no longer fit for purpose, is it possible to have it remanufactured so I can keep the dated outer shell?

Unless the oil inside has leaked out, if it was working 20 years ago and has been in reasonably protected storage during that time there is no reason your coil won't still be functional. They don't really fail from just sitting around.
I have opened coils to photograph the windings inside. The casing is usually roll formed to hold the cap with the terminals in place. It is hard to un-roll the top of the can without damaging it but in theory you could re-seal the coil if the top of the can is not damaged when taking the coil apart. I have not heard of anyone doing this commercially.

My early November 61 car, had been sitting since 1983, and the original coil is still working.
