I can dig out a photo - if possible I will publish it on here. Or if someone would like to do that for me, I will send it to their email.

If you are wondering about the "story" referred to earlier in this thread. After her time as a Mini driver Liz Jones became involved in the world of dog breeding. Sadly she was embroiled in a scandal regarding her treatment of some of her dogs & subsequently slipped from public view.

This does not as far as I am concerned have any impact whatsoever regarding her earlier & much more interesting history as one of the very few successful female Mini racers.

Message from YMJ,

He was competing in a up-to-1000cc race against other marques but mainly Minis - I may even be able to find the event programme. See who else was racing - see if anyone racing that day is on the Mk1 board!

'couldn't find the programme for the Mallory meeting but found the programme for Snetterton 19 April 1965, where he was racing against.....

RM Henderson
T Jiggins
PB Watson
J Wheeler
J Thornborrow
A Abraham
MS Kay
D Cuff
DSJ Meer
CD Stancomb
JP Chappel
BM Rigby
Revd J Fellingham
GE Janzen
and
G Marshall !!!!

everyone except him had 997 Coopers or 970S's

Thanks for doing that, Mark.

Points to notice......

1. When I say "prepared" I mean, specifically, ported 850 head and inlet/exhaust manifold, Jag H6(?) carb, 1 3/4" straight through exhaust pipe, no carpets, interior trim, grille or bumpers, homemade re-profiled standard camshaft (basically he turned off the heels by 40 or 50 thou)......er, that's it :?

2. The crowd. 1000s of people watching a very ordinary (by any standards) club meeting

3. Drivers' crash helmet. Some thing never change! It is a cast-off from Bob Anderson, his mate and a current Formula 1 driver at the time. He could not afford to race and buy a helmet! Fast forward 45 years - all my helmets are cast-offs from Oliver Gavin, my mate and current Corvette ALMS driver. I cannot afford a Swifty gearbox and a decent Arai!

4. If you zoom in and look very closely you can see the white knuckles of a terrified driver understeering into oblivion. He had just started racing and wasn't sure about tyre pressures - basically you had to pump them up high enough to stop the tyres peeling off the rims but not so high that the car wouldn't slide into the barriers.

5. Mum drove us to school in it the next day.

Love the photo, and the story ! I notice John Chappel of Howley fame on the entry list, he ran a dark blue and white 970.

That picture is from the 1963 Motor Six Hour Race at Brands Hatch where she shared the car with Timo Makinen and they finished 2nd in class.

I'm a bit 'mesmerised' by this photo, keep looking at the details!

1963, it's a 997 Cooper I presume, interesting to see the twin tanks and the set up for refuelling, and it looks like it's p!ssing down rain! :?

Is that Liz hopping over the Pit wall? looks like a wet backside! ;)

Great picture :geek:
