My hinges are brass but the screw threads are mainly knackered. Some have been welded over, other have rusted oblivion..
Mini spares list a replacement set but state they're not suitable for early hinges; does any know if replacements are available or if they're not what the spec of the threads on the hinge side is?
Need to hang the doors (or what's left of them) to assist with fitting a panels..
Cheers
Gary.

Re: Screws for external hinges
This may or may not be relevant...
There is a series of "British Standard Brass" threads which are all 26TPI,
regardless of size. Are the hinges "BSB" thread, or should they be?
If they are and someone's used 1/4" UNF (28TPI) instead, this could be
why the threads are knackered.

Re: Screws for external hinges
As far as I ca tell the threads in the hinges are fine. It's the threads that went through the a panel that are shot.
Good point about BSB threads. Might solve the problem.

Re: Screws for external hinges
The Minspares kit has M6 studs and screws and is intended for the non-genuine replacement hinges.
The original hinges all had 1/4" UNF threads.
The 10 studs, which were only ever supplied with the hinges, were all fully threaded and of different lengths depending on location.
I've always just used 1/4" UNF x 1" stainless screws and cut the heads off to give studs of the correct length.
Alternatively, both Minispares and Somerford suggest using heater tap studs as replacements for the 10 studs.
The lower hinges had 1 x 1/4" UNF x 5/8" Pan Pozi and 1 x 1/4" UNF x 5/8" Hex Set screw each,
and the upper hinges each had a 1/4" UNF x 3/4" Pan Pozi screw

Re: Screws for external hinges
I have a partial set of brass hinges somewhere and I remember that they had 1/4 UNF threads as NickD said.

Re: Screws for external hinges
Code: Select all
1/4" = 6.35mm
1/4" UNF = 28TPI 60 degree angle
1/4" Brass = 26TPI 55 degree angle
1/4" BSF = 26TPI 55 degree angle
M6x1 = 25.4TPI 60 degree angle
or Brass.
You can put an M6 bolt in a 1/4" BSF/Brass female threaded
hole, but it will be a bit slack.
The A/F size on a 1/4" BSF nut is a bit larger than 7/16"
(0.4375") at 0.445"
One of the very few "bodges" that is almost acceptable.

Conclusion: If a 1/4" UNF bolt does not go into the hinge, but
an M6 does, but it's a bit slack - The thread is probably either
1/4" BSF or 1/4" Brass (Which are the same).
