MASTER CYLINDER RESTORE

Post by minidean »

Can the break and clutch master cylinders be restored. I don't think they leak so i was thinking of soda blasting them? Anyone ever done this??

Thanks

In general the answer is yes, they can be restored.

Are you focused on a cosmetic or functional restoration? You can easily clean and re-finish the outer surfaces just like any other part. For a functional rebuild the question is what does the bore look like? If there is pitting and scoring of the bore you don't want to rebuild the master cylinder by simply fitting new seals. The pitting and scoring will just damage the new parts. For valuable master cylinders with bore damage you could have them sleeved and rebuilt by a professional.

For a top quality restoration use only NOS genuine ones in original Lockheed boxes. Youn know it makes sense. ;)

I would recommend Classiccar Automotive in Chelford Macclesfield - superb work, the will re plate your cans and re sleeve worn cylinders and they will come back just like new.

Have you got any Photos of restored cylinders by the company and what do they charge ??

Is the plating like the original dull finish ??

Thanks Ian

Original plating was tin, repro's seem to be zinc.

I have tried everywhere to get the old tin plating redone . But all they can do is the bright zinc or yellow

You can get kits (even in the UK ;) ) to do your own Tin Plating;-

http://www.caswellplating.com/electropl ... -kits.html (they also have agents in the US and here in Aust)

however there are a few firms - in the UK - who do it;-

http://www.thgplating.co.uk/

http://www.ecwilliams.co.uk/tin-plating.html

Our platers can certainly do Tin Plating.

Keep in mind, many of these places tend to only deal with Industrial customers and many of those tend to put through bulk batches, so you may have a wait or they may even turn you away. The guys we use while they will do a single bolt if you like, they do have a big sign up at the counter saying they don't do Automotive Parts, I've never actually asked about that (and they do know what our bits are), but I suspect in the past, they have had guys walking in with dirty greasy, parts. I always clean and wire wheel everything, part out of respect and part because we actually get a better finish and I know they appriciate it.

I'm no electro-plater, but I think they have to copper plate steel bits first, in order to Tin Plate them.

Just be aware, while it maybe original to have them Tin Plated, this finish offers no corrosion resistance for steels, it really is for non-ferous metals.
