inline 1071 engine?????

Post by chris-pilling »

Hello, im after a bit of advice. Ive been offered a inline 1071 engine pocketed block etc? ive not seen it yet and im not fully clued up on early stuff as much as i would like to be!
Will the engine numbers be the same as the tranverse 1071? like the head? 163 head? (with it being pocketed id be thinking not)? mains? rods? im guessing the crank will be a bit different! or does a inline 1071 not exist? just a standard 1100 motor? or is it possibly a formula junior engine? questions!

cheers chris

It could be a formula junior engine. Many many years ago I had ( and wish I had'nt almost given it away) an XSP in line engine in a Sprite, it was much as you describe, pocketed block, 163 head, FJ crank and con rods with very large fully floating little ends.Needed ptfe pads in the little ends but unfortunately these lasted but not very long at all hence scored bores within but a few hours of running. Seems the engine had been built as an experimental unit by Morros Engines dive before it went over the wall. If it's no use to you let me know, out of pure nostalgia I have ideas of recreating said AH Sprite.

best

Well a 1071 is a large bore block so no need for pocketing, it must be a small bore 1098.

Its either a silk purse or more likely a sows ear.

It could be an FJ engine, in which case it will most likely have a 185 or 626 cylinder head fitted, possibly at a different angle to a "normal" S one. It will also be small bore, but with larger than normal mains & big ends. It will probably have an opening where the fuel pump usually goes for a dry sump pump & an XSP engine number.

Its more likely to be a normal 1100 with a large bore head fitted.

I'm sure that with a couple of pictures the mystery could be cleared up very easily.

Al,

I think that there were various sizes over the years.

There is an excellent thread on FJ engines somewhere on a previous version of the forum, not had chance to find it yet though.

cheers for the link Mark. ive no photo's yet.. im going tomorrow to have a gander, so i will take some then. some bit are missing apparently so i dont know what to expect.

Can anybody tell me what sort of numbers should i look for? for example if its going to be a sows ear whats a normal 1100 engine number like for a inline motor? he just described it to me as a 1071 so my ears pricked up! and im guessing a 1071 motor number would be something like C826? stamp either on the block to gearbox face or near the water pump? accroding to the info on that link? to be fair im more interested in the car as a project but the 1071 engine would be a nice brucy bonus.

cheers guys, its great info.

kind regards chris

Hello, I went to view the car and engine today and I'm sure the engine is a sows ear! It was just a pocketed 1100! But he did have an interesting 1425cc engine.

Hi chris told you it would be a pile of cr!! 1071 =1275 bore no need to pocket block.
The 1425cc will be junk to unless you have a minor or midget.
Too many people get caught out by thinking ooohhhh it's got 11 studs and a 1300cc head and tappet chest covers it's an s motor only to find what they have bought is a pile of junk cheers Jon

Yeh, I know what you mean! You can't use any of the bits of the motor for a transverse. Me and the old fella have decided to go halves on it as its quite a cool thing.. There's a lot of work in it though..So my dads cars gona have to sit outside! Haha.. Its got some Mag jap wheels with it too, shame it wasn't a 1071 though, I'm worried people are going to bid more than what its worth just because he mentioned 1071! He was a driver and not a builder.. So he didn't know much about it, interestingly though he sent the so called 1071 of to a machine shop who had it years then he asked for it back which took ages and then he got it back.. I think they gave him something else back as the car looks like it would have had something fancy in it. I'l let you know if we own it.. You can help.. Bring a shovel.. Ha
