Re: old garages
thats very interesting. i really enjoy seeing old photos. thanks for posting
i did look on google maps and found roughly where the show room was but was not 100% what shop it was. love to peel back a few lays for paint off the top of that shop front to reveal the old shop name. glad to see the town and shops have not changed much.
i think once the car is finished i have to make the trek from the south coast to kendal. it will be a bit of full circle but 52-53 years later

Re: old garages
Recently I have been handed this to sell and thought I'd post a picture before it goes on Flebay. As you can see it is from Hawkins Motors Ltd, who, from the plaque, were based in Cornwall. From the 3 digit phone number I guess it is from the 1950's or '60's. From the size I would guess it would have been attached to the dash and would easily fit on the top rail of a Mini. It's made of cream (yellower than in the picture) bakelite, with the script etched into the surface.

Re: old garages
Just thought I would put up some information about my home towns heritage. This garage was also a very early authorised repairer for Rollls Royce one of very few in the NW.
We also have Mr Timberlake amongst others to thank for forming the team that is now Wigan Athletic.
These are very early pictures and Baldwin Timberlake as far as I can remember finished its days in the building that is now Go Outdoors in Caroline Street.

Re: old garages
Does anyone know anything of F.G Smith Motors of Goodmayes, Essex?
This is where my car was delivered Ex-Works to.. I don't think the building is there anymore, long since replaced with a Tesco.
I found a few references to them here, but looks like the company is now dormant.

I'd like to have a replica dealer sticker/plate made up for my car..

Re: old garages
Further to Surf Blue63's posting of the Hawkins Motors, St Austell supplying dealer plaque, might anyone have any memorabilia from Carlyon Bay Motors, St Austell, from the 1960s? My Morris Cooper S was supplied new by them in 1966 (it had been in stock for six months!) and I would very much like to buy any period item such as key fob, tax disc holder, rear window sticker - whatever. Anything anybody?
Garry.

Re: old garages
Mann, Egerton & Company Ltd. was an automotive and aerospace company headquartered in Norwich. United Kingdom. The company was formally founded in 1905 by Gerald Mann, an electrical engineer, and Hubert Egerton, although the two had been working in partnership for a number of preceding years. Various parts started to be sold off from the mid-1960s and they finally disappeared in 1986.
The art deco tower of their showroom in Morden, Surrey was a local landmark. Sadly whilst the site is still a car dealership for Peugeot the building has disappeared.

My brother Steve did his apprenticeship as a BL motor mechanic in the 1980's here, shame the art deco tower did not have a preservation order on it.

Re: old garages
Looking on Google Earth it looks like that building is long gone. The current occupiers are
Name: F A Gill Ltd.
Address: 17 Birmingham New Road
City: Wolverhampton
Postal Code: WV4 6BL
Pete, you found Birmingham Road. The New Road is a bit further south. Follow the road passed Thompson Avenue and you will come to Birmingham New Road. St Teresa's is at number 23.

You can find the rear of the John Rhodes garage on the left of this image from October 1973, taken on Dimmock Street looking towards Birmingham New Road (click the larger image option for a better view though):

Georges Garages at Warton on the road from Preston to Lytham, south of Blackpool. Austin sales and service, many a Cooper and 'S' at this garage. Now all gone, the house to the left is there, but the small showroom, filling station workshop and stores, out of shot, is now a Tesco
