Re: Introduction of MK III boot lid
It is strongly believed that some very late MK2's were indeed fitted with a MK3 bootlid from new. But Simon would be able to confirm or deny this, I am sure.

Re: Introduction of MK III boot lid
They were indeed fitted to the very last Mk2 Coopers (not Ss). I actually had one of these bootlids on a Mini I had a good while ago.
Basically it's a standard single skinned "Mk3" type bootlid without the holes for the Mk3 number plate lamp. Instead it was drilled and had the captive nuts to fit the number plate flap.
My dad was working as a mechanic in the BMC dealership in my local town at the time and remembers that only the late 1969 and (very) early late registered 1970 998 Coopers had these fitted.
I must buy back my bootlid - a local auto jumbler has it for sale (incorrectly advertised as a Mk1 bootlid I might add!!!)

Re: Introduction of MK III boot lid
Late Mk 2 cars certainly had bootlids with the Mk 3 larger number plate pressing but still with the swinging number plate and associated captive nuts - I suspect they appeared around September 1969. They weren't on June 1969 cars but were on November ones.
These were initially double skinned but by the time the Mk 3 S appeared in April 1970 they had the open frame inside.

Re: Introduction of MK III boot lid
I have a MKIII boot lit but with all the MKII things on it.
This came from a very late Austin Mini MKII 1000 Seven.
The 1000 badge was on the lower left side and the MKI
Seven badge was on th lower right side, above the hanging
numberplate was the MKII Austin Mini MKII badge.
I still have it so I will make a picture of it, this boot lid set up
was as far as I know for the Duch marked only. I had a singel skin.

Re: Introduction of MK III boot lid
I've always thought double skinned MKIII boot lid were an aftermarket replacement item, as we can find nowadays.
