Sep 59 Mini Minor

Post by SteveG »

I've missed my old Sep 59 Mini Minor since selling it a few years ago but have been lucky enough to find another one. Its approx 50 chassis numbers older then my last car so pretty chuffed. Chassis is 2723

Its been painted a really nice 70's orange colour but appears OEW. All the panels are original including doors but there are some serious rust issues in the rear end. Mainly Boot and LHS wing, also Left rear corner at parcel tray. The front panel is complete with the raised square bumps on slam panel. Petrol tank is original with no drain hole. The door glass and front screen has been replaced but rest is original. Engine is non original but after phoning the owner before last i'm told he has the original block in his garage so will soon collect that. The interior is all missing and speedo has been replaced.

The handbrake cables are original 59' with the small tubes on radius arms. The radius arms themselves are the fabricated 59 along with the trumpets. The roof with its no drip rail and drilled holes for drainage is in very good condition. THe ignition switch, drivers door handle and boot handle all appear original with the little raised bump. Chrome trim on the door pockets is the 59 style 'longer' type and screwed in. Wiring loom is all there including the wires for rear pocket lights. Bumpers are original with the longer ends that bend round. (the rear one is in very bad condition though) The housing for the floor start button is welded on and not part of the floor pan / tunnel. Original 'flat' dash switch panel. Also the original 59 style smiths heater with 3 bolt mounting is present.

It has the straight gear stick, original flimsy (cardboard?) speedo cowl, rear windows are correct with small hinges. (Glass dated 2nd qtr 59 and 3rd qtr 59) Inner mud guards are there hence why 'A' panels are in good condition I think.

This is the early type shell with large front floor pans. It appears to have more original parts then my Clipper blue 59 so well chuffed.

I'll put up a selection of photos but this will be a long term project with slow progress.

Has anyone ever seen these? They are the 2 holes that are in door pocket at 'B' pillar end. I presume the holes are so you can fit pocket either door and have the door check strap fitted. Out of all the many mk1's i've owned I have never seen these little bungs. Perhaps they thought it a waste of money and scrapped them early on?

According to the parts book it is just a Morris 850 thing. Must have left them off the Austins as a cost saving.

On Austin's too but they were fitted before paint.

Cowley fitted them after paint so they're black.

Rich. Bill has stated Austins had them too. He even went on to mention they were painted on Austins.

I believe this makes them a higher spec then the Morris Version.

Put that in your pipe and err smoke it!

steve, your wrong, the fact that the austin (small a  ) fitters painted them just shows a lack of attention to detail, whereas the Morris engineers took the time to ensure the job was done correctly shows that every single aspect of the car was well thought out and done correctly..........

I assume they fitted the catches before painting, so they could open and shut the doors to make sure they fitted ok, then it was too much hassle to take them off before paint

all the bits and bobs on the b post where painted as well, so it makes sense
