Abolition of the Road Fund Licence Disc

Post by Lakeland997 »

When the UK tax disc is abolished on 1st October, I'm thinking that I could permanently display one of my old discs in my screen or one of those 1960s reproductions.
I assume that most classic owners are going to want to display a disc of some kind.

Anyone heard anything different or aware of an issue with that?

...Well it shouLd be but !!! ...a cautionary tale.. only last week I had a letter from the M I D asking me to insure my cooper S.. I thought W T F !!!??..ALL THE INFO HELD RELATES TO THE REGISTRATION PLATE ON YOUR CAR ..... I have had it continually ensured in all the time I have owned it apart from a S O R N years ago.. I checked with the guys who sent the reminder letter and they said it wasn't on their Govt computer ?? so I could have theoretically flagged up on an A N P R !!!!????...anyhows it transpires that it was a glitch in the system that my insurers didn't type in the correct reg number when I renewed/paid for the current years policy.... ,..the letter O being taken for a zero would you believe ???!!! obv I hold an insurance cert if I had of been stopped by the law !! but it took 3 tel calls plus 1 email by me to rectify the problem !!!....appar it can take anything up to 6 days for the govt computer to get updated !!!!....I have never experienced a problem of this nature in nearly 40 years of driving..... its just like buying and selling property these days or getting a mortgage !!! the system is shit and unjust never mind over- complicated .. did anyone see Benefits Britain last night ??!!! 500-800 a week for some families ????!!!!!..53000-56000 net benefit a year for some !!! feck me !!!!....- how fair is that for hard working couples on say 20-30000 k per annum !!!......anyhows my point is tech ??? is it really all for the better ??? nooooooooo !!!... foxy52

Yeah I was thinking of doing the same! 8-)

In fact, I just got some reproduction ones from this chap http://www.poplargreg.com as a present for my Dad and his Frogeye Sprite. They look really good so will get some for the Mini too.

Although not an issue for any Historic Vehicle that qualifies for zero Road Fund Licence, it's interesting to see that whenever a car changes hands the RFL will be automatically refunded to the previous keeper and the new keeper must re-tax the vehicle.

Why is that interesting? Well you only receive a refund of complete months and the new keeper will have to tax the car from the beginning of the month in which the sale takes place.
That means that the RFL will be paid for twice for an average of about 2 weeks on every sale.

If the average RFL costs say £130 that's £5 per sale. I believe there are 7 million used car transactions per year in the UK... £35,000,000 extra revenue... :o
On top of the vast savings from eliminating the tax disc itself.

When they took away window stickers here they claimed it was a cost saving measure. The thing was that they charged the cost of the sticker to the punter anyway - but the registration cost didn't go down.

That's a very good point, it's extra taxation by stealth pure and simple PLUS they will also charge you for the priviledge of online payment. Radio 2 have just had the DVLA spokesman on answering questions, and he was was stumped by most questions. He was also forced to admit that they only have ten camera cars for the whole of the UK , only partial use of cameras in place on motorways and haven't caught one single clone car in the last 12 months despite number plate cloning being a well known practice to swerve ANPR cameras and accident claims (I've been hit by two vehicles with clone plates over the years). Number plate cloning is bound to go through the roof, all that tax/MOT/insurance dodgers have to do is look online to see if their selected victim's car is taxed and how long for.

All this stuff about ANPR.. I was under the impression that they can't read the non-reflective plates, especially if you have the pre '63 typeface.

Presumably somebody standing there with a laptop checking it on the DVLA vehicle enquiry site. Should be efficient... :D :D
