'S' Speedos

Post by ianh1968 »

I've often wondered how many different variants of 'S' speedo have
been produced...

I have two, which are slightly different, they both are fully numbered
from 20-120mph.

The one in the Mini has:
Gear I = 42
Gear II = 60
Gear III = 83

The Marcos one has:
Gear I = 33
Gear II = 55
Gear III = 78
All figures are approximate...

Can anyone identify these for me?

I have also seen speedos with only 30-50-70 etc on them, the same as
those as sold by MiniSpares Centre. I much prefer the look of the fully
numbered faces and I have bought the 30-50-70 type a couple of times
and replaced the faces with my old ones.

Any information would be appreciated.

The crucial number is the turns/mile number after the serial number. 1280 is for a 3.44 diff and the higher numbers are for higher diff ratios. The speed 'marks' would be different for each speedo. I would guess there is a speedo for every stock diff ratio.

Confused by this one!

120 speedo, as per 970, 1071, early 1275 etc.

BUT has oil pressure / filter lights at 9.00 and 3.00 O'clock and voltage regulator on back.

Image

Centre has numbers 4417 / 00 1376

Were all Early S speedos that stop at 120 (dead) non instrument voltage regulator type? :geek:

Ian,

The speedo in your Mini looks like it has the gear change points marked for the close ratio gearbox (normally straight cut). Is this what you have fitted?

I had wondered if this was one of the possibilities...

This is really good as this car does have an SCCR box.

The box is a 5 speeder, however, originally the MiniSpares
ST gearset which had about 0.877 as 5th. With a really close
5th like this, it was more of a 4.5 speed box...

I rebuilt the box a couple of years ago using a new Clubman
set, but retaining the 5th gear pair from the previous ST set.
I have ended up with a really nice proper 5 geared setup.

Code: Select all

    Ratio Mph Change/Drop Overall
1st 2.583 6.7 32%
2nd 1.711	10.2 66% = 2/3 49%
3rd 1.250	13.9 73% ≅ 3/4 67%
4th 1.000	17.4 80% = 4/5 83%
5th 0.833	20.9 83% = 5/6 100%
On the now "no-longer-available" ST set, the 5th gear driving
gear was 27 teeth vs. 26 teeth for the now current Clubman set.

rich@minispares.com please note! : -
For road use, this combination of Clubman + ST 5th is fantastic...

Please get the 27 tooth gears re-done so I can make another
box the same.
