Special Tuning Replica Clubman

Post by landscape.design »

The car is still a work in progress, but recently got the sump gaurd fitted and started on the dash - still need a few instruments, switches etc but got the hard stuff (particularly Halda!)
Current project is the doors - which are quite a challenge, with extended window sill to enable fitting of mk1 sized sliders. Fortuanately I have some good photos of the real thing to help me. Grille still needs re-painting and boot lid/rear lights etc at the back (needs to be pre 76) - but we will get there!!

The car is registered in 1972 here (nz) but appears to have been re-shelled at a later stage. So there is no rust at all and the car is pretty straight. The downside is the extra work to bring it back to 1970 spec!!

XJB 308H didn't have a reversing light on the boot in its 'Works' days but did have strange bulge to the left of the (early style) boot handle on its Mk 1 & 2 style bootlid. This is it on the 1970 Scottish Rally.

Would the bump be something to do with the filler cap on the Autovita fuel tank?

I'm interested in the sumpguard. Is it a "kosher" TechDel mag one or something that you had made up in alloy?

Looks very nice by the way. Mine isn't to historic regs with BIG brakes and a nice ECU.

Have you tried pad4 on here for the windows. He's pretty good & very helpful.

That's looking good Mike. So when are you & Paul coming over for Beaulieu & Goodwood?

Thanks for all your feedback - I will update photos as more happens!

The sumpgaurd is fabricated, using photo's of the original as a guide - I suspect it is 'squarer than the original but looks o.k at standoff. It is duralloy, lightwieght and strong - would do a good job if called upon!!

The photo is really useful as I only have a couple that show the rear of the car in it's current form (with reversing light) and I am aware that the real car has 'evolved' since 1970 - and my car is intended to represent xjb in worl cup rally trim. To that end anyone reading this that has other photo's of the car in 1970, I would appreciate any more information as I still have gaps to fill!!

Paul, I have found that the Ellesmere lake dust is not correct - European dust is different, so I am trying to import some 'correct' dust to apply(I am surprised you hadn't already picked up on this!)
